Oscar Jumping

Describe what's going on in more detail... Is this when there's movement around the tank at night? Can you hear him hit the lid or just water splashing?

The only movement around his tank at night would be a cat or too passing by, I don't hear him jump often but i do hear him jump up and hit the lid on occasion, most of the time I'm guessing hes jumping while I'm asleep. He did this before when I didn't have cats in my room at night so I don't think he's getting startled by them

Do a water change. What do you feed him?
I'm glad you have a lid, a lot of people don't. Those people are :hitting: and need common sense :duh:

He gets 75%+ water change a week that should be more then adequate for just him in a 55gallon I'd think? As for food he gets wardly cichlid pellets with raw shrimp when I can get it which Isn't too often. He also gets the occasional little bit of reptomin turtle pellets cuz he likes them more and their not to different in composition then the cichlid pellets. I'd love to feed him more but there's only so much variety I can provide when my only income is food stamps for 1 person that have to feed me and my fiance

wardley isn't the greatest food, IMO. lots of fillers in it (if you see wheat or other grain type products in the first few ingredients, then the food isn't very healthy). i'd suggest picking up some Omega One cichlid pellets. they aren't really any more expensive than wardley, and because omega is a higher quality food, you won't have to feed as much of it. petsmart carries omega foods.

if you have a bit of extra cash, i highly recommend getting a jar of NLS pellets - wonderful food IMO.

you can also add to his diet with different veggies and fruit. once in a while i'll give my oscar thawed out, deshelled peas. he's not as keen on them as nightcrawler worms, lol, but he eats them. i also feed the tank small banana bits now and then, because my p. polleni really likes banana. bits of zucchini get fed on nights when i cook with it. cucumber bits too. you want to avoid 'gassy' veggies though, so no broccoli/cauliflower, etc.

another thing i did recently was set up a 'worm farm'. took an empty 2.5 gallon, put some dirt in it, and tossed in a bunch of earthworms (nightcrawlers) that i bought real cheap at petsmart recently. hopefully my worm farm ends up with a nice population that constantly replenishes itself, so i can have a supply of worms to feed the fish whenever i want.

He doesn't like banana's or peas, he does get the occasional worm I can find or insect. I know its not the best food but I still have half a can to go through and no cash to get anymore food. I'd love to set up a worm farm of some sort but my Fiance would kill me and my grandparents too (living in their house for just a lil longer)

If there were he couldn't see em through the lids, they're solid plastic with glass over where the lights sit and only enough room in back for a HOB filter. Plus all I ever see in the house a spiders and little gnats.
