Give him a tank mate. When my Oscar was alone his pouting was multiple days. Put him with some other fish and it lasts 20 minutes now. Seems like pouting to me

This sounds like pouting to me, it can be over the top sometimes. When I rearrange my puffers tank, she will pout and not eat for over a week sometimes. The only thing I'm not sure about is the "reaction" you are saying that he has when approaching food.
thank you for response.
When your puffer pouts over tank changes, does she act comfortable toward the items?
He investigated up close immediately & also hung around things.

If it's pouting he must've forgotten why and be in a psychotic state. He will lay in plants with the leaves wrapped better than a hot dog bun (plants r on their sides). My non-fish husband called me over to the sight: "Look, he has the leaves curled all around himself like a blanket, but his eyes are peeking over. all your animals are weird."

I removed the slate rocks last night. he liked resting on them, but their crumbs might be stuck in his throat slowly making him die.

well, I live out in the sticks and the lfs is like hell. barely any stock, even dithers aren't always healthy. I looked there before this started, but didn't feel good about anything.
he's in temporary small tank. a brief visit in my 75G, he immediately went into aggressive mode...even to the pretty big male heckelii. so tankmates for him are on pause. if I knew what would work in his 60G & a healthy store in so cal, I could ask my husband to bring something from out of town tomorrow. but if it doesn't work I'm screwed.

she never acts scared or anything towards the objects, just turns dark and hates me..lol

LOL.
Hmm. He reverted to being scared of me for a couple days. I figured he didn't like my hand messing around in tank.
when he stopped acting shy I figured something worse is wrong.
my luck, probably adopted a freakin' bipolar oscar.
