My wife just told me that someone at her work has 3 Tiger Oscars they want to give away today or tomorrow. She is going to give them to us but I'm worried about my tank. My tank has been filled and running for about 2 weeks now. Today was my 5th day of adding a little bit of amonia to the tank.

Could I be ready for the O's? My tank is a 125g with a wet dry. Im going to go get a test kit shortly, is there anything I should specifically look for? Could I go ahead and pick up a pleco? Would 3 O's and a pleco be too much?

A few pieces of info that is probably important is that I have tiny bubbles in my sump and I have white fuzzy stuff in my tank, I think from what I have read is that its algae, Its getting alot better, I think it has something to do with the tank cycling

Mods- I think this maybe should have gone in General Aquaria Discussion:confused:   , Sorry

i think you should be fine.. i added mine after about a week and they are doing great.. just make sure you test the water again before you put the monsters in ..!@!!!!!!

Well I just tested my water, I think I got some good results and some bad results.

My ammonia tested at 8.0+ (yes that 8.0). I think this must be because I added ammonia about 5 hours earlier

My Ph level was at 7.6, Ill still need to check and see what is recommended for Oscars

My Nitrates and Nitrites level both tested at 0, How does that make sense if I had an ammonia level of 8.0?

How about getting some bacteria-in-a-bottle to kick-start the filter (actually to takeup the slack for when you put the fish in).

Do you have aeration in the tank or sump? It will help with the gassing.

Ever notice when someone wants to give you some fish it's always a rush... :D

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Hey Doc

Aeration? do you mean like air in the tank or sump? My sump isnt covered if thats what you mean. Like I said, right now I have little tiny bubbles in my sump, I still need to get the filter for the sump

Since I have 0 nitrates and nitrites, should I maybe do like a 25% water change?

Also should I stop adding ammonia because of the 0 Nitrates/nitrites?

I had an emergency a while back & put a 6 inch tiger O in a 55 with a 4 inch JD. The tank was conditioned, but not cycled by any stretch of the imagination. You have 5 days in, once the ammo falls.

They are all well now, but there was a bit of stress. No sickness or anything, just stress. you will likely be fine, but you should wait till the ammonia goes down, throw some bottle-o-bacteria or drop in some established filter media if you can. Watch the params & change water as needed.

I found this graph:
n-cycle.gif

I think it helps explain whats going on, I think I have no nitrites because they havent formed yet, not because they have been cancelled out

This graph comes from http://malawicichlids.com/mw01017.htm (by Chris Cow)

I have driftwood from an established tank, Maybe that has helped....

Whatever you do dont put fish in a tank with that much ammonia.
If you have to get the fish right away drain the tank and refill with fresh. If you can get the filter or the media from the tank they are in take it and use on your tank
