I have a 120gallon tank that I have 2 young oscars and a pleco in. I want to get at least one more oscar, preferabley 2. I would like to have 4. But I don't want them to be cramped at all. According to the 1" of oscar x 3 = gallons that would be cramming them. But I was just wondering if I could make an exeption and keep my fish happy. And if I can't get 2, could i get another 1? for a total of 3.

I dont think its a problem(3 even 4); give them places to call their own. keep the water clean cause oscars are pigs. But be prepared to upgrade if needed.

I keep 2 in a 55, I wont go more than 2 in it. they each have their own digs & interact well..

Idealy I would like a 75~100 for them but no one has offered to give me one yet.

The guy I got the tank from had 4 in the 55, that was crowded

Alright. As for filtration, is 2 reverse flow undergravel (w/ spounge filter powerheads) a H.O.T. Magnum (marineland) canister filter w/ bio wheel, a small 40gallonish bio filter, and a 24w UV sterillizer enough filtration? the powerheads do about 170gph and the magnum does 250gph i believe.

Personally I dont believe that is enough filtration. With messy fish like piranhas and oscars its good to shoot for a 10x turn over rate. I would ditch the smaller biowheels and get two marineland 350s (that is 700gph combined right there) and with you UGFs and cannisters you will be close to that rate.

As always though STAY UP on water changes!

do i need to get that stuff now? my oscars (the 2 i have) are only about....2 inches long. even if i get another one or two, would it be alright to hold off on getting the extra filtration for say...a few months or so? heh I need to invest in a new car.

No you odnt but oscars grow QUICK. Ill give you a hint on how to get those filters for cheap. Order a catalogue from big als. Their prices on those filters are like half of other places. Bring the catalogue into your local petsmart, grab two off of the shelf and show them the big als price and they will match it!

edit: I mean the bio wheels

well heres the hookup, i actually work at petsmart so i get 15% off - in store only though. also, online those filters are like...30 bucks each anyway. Which is cheaper, big als or petsmart's online...

edit: big als is 10 bucks more online for the penguin filters. I just checked.

I would either do 1, 2 or 4 Oscars.

3 isnt usually a good number of Oscars to have. If you have a really large tank and get quite a few that can school together, odd numbers in anything under 250 gallons could turn bad for the "third wheel"

Usually, Oscars will pair up (not necessarily male and female). So what might happen with 3 Oscars, is 2 will buddy up and the third man out will become a punching bag. If he's not beat up, he could just be overpowered when feeding time comes and he'll wither away.

So i would try even numbers.
