oscar questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would like to say that they will grow some, but they also might die from the move. Understand that dispite how "good" this fish look, they are sick. From being kept in those conditions for so long there is no doubt that they are sick and might die from the stress of the move. I hope they get better once put in better conditions. And be prepared for alot of sulking!!! And put up some pics once you get them!

keep posted everyone- pics of there home and future home coming today. Just waiting on the camera girl to get home! Turns out we are getting the entire set up- both oscars , big ol' pleco, 55 tall , stand , some crazy old top fin that i always thought was a marineland until last night, and of course the sustrate. SO what the plan is so far is to break down my 55 long move the current rocks and wood and filters and the couple fish im keeping into my 45g tubs (ive seen people setting up ghetto tanks this way) , then use the long to build my w/d for the 180 . Im actually on now figuring out specs and design for the sump. . . ITS BRAIN RACKING!! , Anyone know where a good page for turning the 55 in to one? ANYWAY then once the w/d is ready set up the 180 , cycle with all avaialable media (sustrate from there current hm, my rocks and wood, my filter with my bio wheels and there pads) I dont see why i couldnt get the paramaters good within a week. WHat do yall think? Ill be basiclly combining the bb from there hm and my tank. Both are established , last week all my levels were 0 I am going again to day with a sample from both to check ph. allright im off to dig in and read more

UPDATE+++ Finished the w/d , set the tank up, cycled, and dadada moved the oscars, 9in albino sailfin (gibbiceps) and a lil female convict that had been hiding from them. The move went extremly well, with the exception of -when i was swooping the pleco and the albino tiger with a plastic bag the previous owner used a ozarka bottle cut in half to scoop the other. He got a little cut on his head but he's good. THey both were eating within 15 min of putting in the new tank and after the first night there hungry again. I know i owe the site a build thread ive just been busy! I did take pics of most of the process. TOMORROW I WILL POST IT!! any suggestions on where? DIY? (w/d) , SA CA ? maybe just in set up and filtration since really i built a filter and im showing you my set up!!

I dont think just tank size contributes to their small size. My oscars were 11 and 12 inches within 2 years. They were also raised in a 55 gallon tank. I dont have any room for a much larger tank so I shy away from oscars now, even though I think they are about the coolest fish. I used to see all the time plain green oscars with the orange eye spot on their tails. They were labeled common oscars. Now I only see ones with less orange labeled as common oscars. Did there used to be a fish in the trade that was plain green, no black, no orange, except for their spot?

no its not 'just' tank size that did it to them. They hardly ever received water changes or gravel vac's. Im on a regular schedule with my tank maintenence so hopefully they'll stay happy and get bigger. Pics coming tomorrow.

that is great that you took them:D, yesterday i saw on craigslist that a lady was trying to sell her two oscars that were in a thirty gallon for 3 years and they were selling them because they had to many pets and she recommended nothing smaller than a 30g. then i saw one where a guy had one in a 20g.
I mean i wasn't the best at first because i had two in a 20g but i knew that i need to upgrade at one point but i didn't realize how fast they grew. needless to say i got them a 40g tank after about 10 months but one died because of aggression then 4 months later when i moved he went in a 100g with two other adoption albinos (not miss treated the guy was just thinning out his stock) and soon going to be in a 180g. I don't get why people would treat a fish that bad. But on the stunting their growth mine was 6" and in 4 months grew to 10" and slowed down now but still growing.
