Soooo, long story short, I don't have enough money to buy yet another big tank, but one of my oscars has passed away and I want a replacement.

I was wondering if I could keep the new (and smaller) oscar in some type of rubbermade container for a few months (maybe 3?). I'm really worried about chemicals and such so I was wondering if there was a brand that was safe.

Or if anyone in the upstate NY area has a spare tank I could purchase cheap or borrow.

Those rubbermaid containers arent made to hold water. Id be concerned of leaking, or them breaking...

check out craigslist for a deal on a tank...

and why purchase a new oscar if you dont have a place for him =O

hey recently i had got some firemouths and an african cichlid and housed them in a regular 25g storage container from my local Walmart i had them in it for about 2 weeks before moving them into there new 30g tank and they did fine ill post some pics... CAUTION THOUGH!! if you get a container of anyy kind make sure its a strong one meaning the walls arent realy flimsy flexible or when you fill water to high in the container it will make a mess and get disformed in which case you have to keep lid on all times and cut hole in top lol i leaned from experience.

first my old holding "tank" then my new 30g long

Never heard a rubber made not holding water. A lot of people here (mfk) uses them as sumps/ wet dry.

Yes you can keep a Oscar in a rubber made container. I set one up for QT tank. Proper filtration and heating, you'll be good.

I do have a place for him. We're finishing a stand for a 135 gallon tank we bought. But if we put our current oscar in that tank, without a tank buddy, he will shoot up in size and there won't be enough room. But if the tank buddy isn't roughly the same size, he will be bullied and possibly eaten.

i would trust a rubbermaid over a plastic bag. thats for sure!

Is there a particular type of plastic container that I should be looking for or not looking for? Is there's a type of plastic I don't want?

I'd like something clear and the filtration and heating is all taken care of.

more tank mates does not = slower growth rate. it all depends on what you feed him... that wives tale about fish growing to the size of your tank etc... consider them all false. the internal organs will grow and pop your fish from the inside out and kill him. if it were true id see 3" mature great white sharks mating in a saltwater fish bowl...

about the rubbermaid idea, when i FIRST started thinking about fish keeping (freshwater fish anyway...) i asked that same question to the worker at Pets Discount and got plenty of :banhim::swear::hitting::spam::newbie: [FLAMING] from the lady there... she didnt want to sell me any oscars....

i got kinda mad, and having worked at many fish stores before (and feeling hungry for revenge) i told her "ok, i will buy some of these then", i picked out 3 or 4 individual fish she had to chase down and net + bag. and i also picked out some anachris. when she was done, i put them all on the counter and left the store.

looking back on it, that was pretty lame of me, but still. i was young and rebellious.

I completely disagree. Those rubbermaid containers will hold water until Jesus comes back. Grab one they are completely safe. I've used them on and off for years... with no problems.

i have used big ones for qt tanks and such many times, you're fine.
