Oscar Tank Filtration and Nutrition

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Like everyone else said you need to thin out your stocking.

Get a better Nitrate tester. I am sure your Nitrates are much more than 0. Infact if everything is working the way it should, a fresh water tank will have nitrate in it. That is just telling you that your nitrogen cycle is working.

i agree, lose some tinfoil barbs, then get an oscar.
but i don't get why people say oscars are messy, mine are fine, i feed them twice a day but just a little, pellets in the morning and homeade food at night. I do twice a week water changes of about 40%, then 25% and my nitrates are around 20 or less. i have more of a problem of them bashing their heads on the lid because they want food so bad but trust me their fat and happy. and once in a while feeder minnows

Also, Id like to add Oscars are a meat eater but still give them stuff like pea's and algea wafers from time to time.

ya that is true my red oscar love algea wafers, my pleco cant get to them in time. i drop them all over the tanks just to watch him try and find them from their scent.

I did a 20% water change last night (1 week since the previous) and I vacuumed the gravel. I tested the nitrate this morning with a nitrate specific test kit and I got 20ppm.

20ppm is quite acceptable.

agreed, amazing fish and so funny. i love my oscars.

Ya 20 is fine but later on you might want bump up size of water change or how often

Do you guys think the 3 tinfoils will reach their max size in my 120? It's 60"L x 18"W x 26"H.

The tank is in the livingroom of my apartment, on the third floor. I should be done with undergrad and a masters by spring 2012, and then I'll be moving... hopefully to a bigger place on the first floor in another city, and then I'll be able to get a bigger tank.

I fed my Oscar 3x a day as much as he'd eat in a sitting until he hit the 6" range. he's down to 2x a day now.. getting earthworm, feeders, frozen, freezedried, ect every few days. he went from about 2.5" to now pushing 8-10" in about 6 months. As a juvie I fed him prime reef flakes, frozen bloodworms, and Hikari excel (it has a higher protein/fat content, and lower phosphate) , he now eats Hikari staple ( I got it once and he won't touch the excel pellets anymore! lol) and his other random meaty foods, and he does love the algae wafers I feed the pleco too.
