I'm hoping to get a few other opinions on a tank mate for an Oscar.

I was recently given a Oscar.. as in yesterday. A friends tank busted a seal and his lone survior was an 8 inch tiger oscar. IMO gorgeous fish... but I've really had my heart set on a pair of jaguar cichlids.

I've read up on MFK about both fish and I've seen others keep these fish together.. usually in a larger tank though. My delima is my tank size, 110g with a 45g W/D. Can anyone make a few suggestions on tank mates and how many?

Oscar's personality vary greatly. Most can have tankmates. You can probably get away with more Cichlids. I had an Oscar with a Jack Dempsey and a Jag before. Along with a few Catsfish.

it could work with the jags, but jags might be too much....go instead with cichlids of similar aggression to oscars, like severums, chocolates, large acaras

IDK, I keep my 2 oscars together and have never considered tank mates, one is a real bully and wouldn't think it would accept another tank mate. When I was researching them before purchase a lot of people had said the personalities vary greatly, possibly why I've never considered it. Good luck with it though

Well this one was/is in pretty big shock.. bleached out color, floating on his side, barley any register of gill movement. Thankfully he seems to be recovering, he is back to his original color and making half hearted attempts at eating.. but he's still very mellow. He pretty much just chills in the corner of the tank (at time I have to check on him to make sure he's still breathing) but then goes on a swim through the tank. I guess I'll just have to give him a lil more R&R and see if he comes out of it before i introduce anything else.

what is the footprint of the tank?

my very first fish was a oscar and me not knowing that they got huge i had it in a 55 gallon tak for around 2 years with a striped raphel catfish that was around 6 inches before i got it and for about 3 weeks around 20 neon tetras. lol the oscar was around 4 inches at the time they didnt last long didnt have to feed him for awhile tho. i would say anything that is big enough to hold its own or any thing thats quick enough to get away from them there not the fastest fish in the world.

oscars and jags will NOT work in the long run esp in a 4ft,,,i know, i grew my two oscars and the jaguar cichlid togehter for 1.6yrs they were always toegether then one day the jag turned and wanted to own the tank,,,then he went into a 3ft for while, wouldnt exsept any tank mates at all,,,,would even attack my hand

I'd try anything, every fish has different personalities. But from my own experience I've had 2 oscars and a jag in a 120, worked great for a month, every fish was about 12". Then like the poster above me said, the jag decided he was the boss and just tore the oscars up. I removed them from the tank that day and they recovered but the temperment of oscars is way too gentle to be housed with jaguars or other highly agressive ca/sa cichlids. I'd reccomend another oscar, maybe some geo's for cleanup :)
