Oscar Tank Mates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Again, I feel like it depends on the temperament of your oscar. I've known earth eaters to have almost mbuna level aggression. One bigger than your oscar will more than likely bully it.

I have my 12" O in with two synos, a pleco and a 10" ornate bichir. Bichir and O are best buds in there, always swimming around together!

Check it out i have had Ocars for Years..always kept with a few Geophagus a JD and a datnoid no problems ...Your problem solved!:headbang2

Could try a sorubim elongatus... They are a cousin to Lima shovelnose catfish but only grow to 12 inches. Of course it is extremely difficult to distinguish between the 2...

Catfish are usually good suggestions. But I was hoping someone could suggest a decent fish that are very passive, that get good color and size and aren't bottom dwellers.

The beauty of a featherfin is that it swims all over the place during daytime. Place a few bits of driftwood and it will be mooching in out and around all day. But its not a great idea to add one to a 6" oscar tank unless it was fairly large. Oscars eat little catfish in the wild and mine was well established in the tank and a decent size before the 3" oscar went in.

Wouldnt a great big pacu live well with an oscar? Just throwing that out there..

There was a recent thread about a pacu that ripped the face off a Oscar...

Also my tank is 100 gallons. So a pacu may be too big to keep long term. But thank u for the suggestions great ideas. So far I picked up a few silver dollars and a couple geophagus (both to large to be eaten)

Silver dollars is always a great way to liven up a tank without adding any aggression. I've kept tigers or red hooks in most bigger tanks.

I've kept oscars in the past....in my experience, the best tank mates for them are arowana, bichirs, and plecos...I once housed a pair of pacu with my oscar and it didn't go well...the pacu were bullying the oscar....the tail of the oscar was ripped apart and it was lying at the bottom of the tank....maybe you can try keeping a gar as your Oscar's tankmate. ...
