Oscar tank size...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oscars are too big for a 50 gal, it may get 12 inch in 18 months but won't stop growing there, over 10 years you should plan on 14+ inch. That size tank would be good far a 10 inch cichlid max. Lots about that would work well in there.
So at what size of oscar i should upgrade my tank?

The tank should be alright till it hits about 10 inch, personally a solo oscars needs a 100 gal

Ok i right now have 3.25 ft wide tank and would upgrade once my oscar reaches 10 inch

What if i didnt upgrade my tank... Will this damage my oscar??

It certainly wouldn't grow to its full potential or live as long as it should. Health issues seem to end up being a problem as well.

8" would be my recommendation. If you don't have at least a 75g i would pass. Your going to get into a tight spot quick with an Oscar growth rate and a 50.

It's not like Oscars are going extinct. Just wait until your can provide an adequate tank or if you want to just have a 50 then get something that will be good life long in that. No shame in it

The words Oscar and 50gallon should not be uttered in the same sentence.
Unless your a battery hen farmer maybe.
Same philosophy, it's cramped restrictive and cruel but it survives and fulfills my needs.

how many gallons would be required to successfully keep an oscar and an asian arowana....

250+, just because of the arowana, they need huge tanks.
50 gallon is definitely not large enough for an Oscar, as everyone here has already said. I would say 90-120 is the bare bones minimum for an adult. I have a 50 gallon, and have kep adult Oscars before... it would be cruel to be honest. I would say it could like in a 50 gallon until about 7" before needing an upgrade.
