Oscar tankmate ideas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh yeah I forgot to mention my Bichirs are both 12"...I have a Endlicheri and a Delhezi. I did have a 4" Senegal but the Endlicheri ate it.:( (he musta been a stunted fish because I bought it at Petsmart and it never grew...my Endli and Delhezi outgrew it)

IMO your current stock level will be moderate when the O & SD's are full grown.
I recommend moderate stocking, but if your willing to put in the extra maintenance work a heavy bio-load/stocking entails...
One or two small SA/CA cichlids or one medium SA/CA cichlid would be OK.
For color? I would suggest perhaps a nice Turquoise Sev, very colorful and generally compatible.

I do not recommend mixing Africans with New world, to many differences in ideal habitats, water parameters and sometimes dietary needs.
With O's, many Africans aggression/speed often can be a problem, O's are often outclassed aggression wise and harassed.

Thank you Chile for that input. I think you have a point and I will go with it.

Last year i got a 90 gallon and got 1 oscar (about 2 inches) and 3 clown loaches of the same size and an 11 inch common pleco

2 weeks later i got a senegal bichir that was around 4 inches long

A year later,
Oscar is around 10-11 inches
Pleco is almost 13 inches
Bichir is about 7-8 inches
Clown loaches 2.5 to 3.5 inches

The oscar and pleco fight all the time over territory as they both decided to take over the same side of the tank
the bichir stays on the other side with the loaches and everyone is happy

Seeing how the oscar outgrew the loaches i was sure to miss at least one but he doesn't even look at them.

I thought about putting a severum last year but i'm glad i went with the bichir seeing how the oscar is quite territorial. He does chase the bichir away when he travels on his side of the tank but i couldn't imagine a severum. At least the bichir can hide easily to to his shape.

Wow! There's a contradiction.
What ya gonna do when the Birchir gets bigger, when the C. loaches get bigger?
Grossly overstocked IMHO, your situation will deteriorate further as time goes on.
