Hello first time posting here,

What would be some good tankmates for my 11" tiger oscar and a hardcore rhino pleco (king of tank kinda funny realy)?

was thinkin like 4-5 silver dollars?

i tried a Gt , when he was small everything was fine when he got to bout 5" the oscar was unrelenting constantly chasing em round the tank.

any ideas would be apreciated!

thanks

If you get a couple of large cichlids, maybe the Oscar won't be so aggressive. I used to have one with a Jack Dempsey and a Royal Clown Knife.

It will be hard to do but if you can find a cichlid big and tuogh enuf to defend itself yet not kill the oscar that would work. You may also want to try a catfish( sun cat, bumble bee cat, anything that doesnt get huge) The silver dollars should also work if big enuough that the oscar can not swallow them.

P.S I have a hardcore Rhino Pleco too :D they are the best

I was thinking maybe a Jd w/ the 4 silverdollars. would that be too much on the bio load? i dont think i could get another catfish my pleco (11") would pretty much kill it i think.

thanks

you could try fire mouths ,or severums, there are some smaller pimlodiea catfish also. Oscar usually don't fight to much they just chase once in awhile I've never seen an astronotus kill any thing not small enough to eat. I kept lager gouramis with 5 -6 inchers before. I kept a 10 inch male with a pr. of 4 female - 6'male octofasciatus(Jack Dempseys) & no problem in a 55 gal. by themselves.

it could be very difficult, if not impossible to add new tankmates with an adult cichlid. your oscar has already decided that tank is his and anything new to his territory could be relentlessly harrassed or killed. yes, oscars are fairly mellow for large cichlids but they are still territorial. if I were to add anything it would only be something the oscar would not see as a threat such as a small school of silver dollars or giant danios. both of these are very fast fish. the trick would be to get them large enough so that the oscar couldn't eat them. :)

I agree. He is the boss now, and anything you put in the tank will be harassed. A pair is always difficult to have, because the dominant will always pummel the "runt". However if you have two "runts" they will split the pummeling. You could get two large cichlids, but then you'll have to consider a larger tank. :screwy:
good luck, keep us posted
