Oscar Tankmates in your experience? (i have looked over older posts)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah theyre a pain in the ass i had some ended up being more useful as food for my fish

Probably should have planned this out before you put random fish together man. 2 sevs and an O in that would be cool. O would be huge and sevs get big too.

I had a plan mate. I was told that i could run with: 2x Sev, 1x Salvini, 1x Firemouth, 1x JD and 1x GT. Just got the O cos he looked fed up and was in a tiny tank, i could easily get rid of him, if that would help my stocking?

Okay well, its back to the drawing board. He'll have to go! I really, really want EBJD and a GT with the Sevs. Hows that and maybe 2x convicts?

I'll tell you right now, the only way that EBJD is going to make it to adulthood is if you have his own little tank set up and you baby him, then maybe he will make it. They can be very finniky fish. It sounds like your trying to do an african tank with larger SA cichlids, and 99 times out of 100 it just dosent work that way. Have you thought about doing like a malawi, or tanganyika tank? you can cram tons of bright pretty africans in your tank, but it just dosent work that well with the vast majoraty SA cichlids due to territory/pollution. You could put a fairly large colony of africans and have a happy and healthy tank, or you can get a like a few med sized SA's or one large or maybe a breeding pair of large SA's and have a happy healthy tank.

Edit: "2x Sev, 1x Salvini, 1x Firemouth, 1x JD and 1x GT" that sounds like a great stocking for your tank, I wouldnt push past this.

I have had no issues with a flowerhorn with my oscars. I got the flowerhorn at adult size though when he was just a bit bigger than my two oscars. My oscars got bigger before long but they actually got along well. In a huge tank they all three stayed together constantly.

Err, that sounds like a plan! I could live with that, i spoke to someone else who suggested that i should maybe go along the route of: Satanoperca, Aequidens particki, Krobia and dwaft pike pair.
But if i could do your edit then i would be happy!

I'm not saying it will 100% work, nothing is fool proof with med/large agressive cichlids except a species tank. But it is a workable grouping! If I might offer some suggestions, I would definately put some pots or build little "caves" with the openings facing away from the other pots/caves. This will allow them to establish their individual territories and block line of sight with each other. This will help curb violence in the tank as well as allow the residence to feel secure. Do the best you can, keep a close eye on everyone and be prepared to remove any troubble makers and you should have a wonderfull tank. Also in the even that you do need to remove a troubble maker dont replace him, it means quarters were too cramped. Good luck to you and your fish!

I think that plan sounds pretty good, I would keep an eye on that salvini as they can be pretty aggressive.

If you like the oscar and want to keep it you could maybe do something like oscar, 2x severums, FM (that you already have) along with a JD or a GT. You'll want to have pretty heavy filtration and really be strict with your water change schedule, but it could work as long as you don't have a super-aggressive killer in the bunch.

Cheers guys, i guess you can only try these things. I'll go with your suggestions and we will see what happens. Remember living in Scotland (Glasgow) the choice of Cichlids is really bad. So i can only roll with what i can get my hands on. Err you've been wonderful and so has everyone else.

Thanks for all your support, look out for pics!

Cheers,

Mark
