Oscar Tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had my 125 set up for about 2 months now with:
(2) oscars
(5) silver dollars
(1) female convict

I've had no issues although they're all pretty young.

Before this setup I had 1 Oscar 1 j/d and 5 silver dollars for about 8 years with no issues. Obviously it depends on your fishs temperment though.

i have 3 oscars, a venny pike cichlid, red eared sunfish, and a rtcxtsn, and a tsn(catfish are moving soon) in my 170g and they all get along fine.

I would pick up a jack Dempsey or red devil. Both do good with oscars. But get a larger Oscar first so he can defend better

Here is my set up: 210g
Tiger Oscar x2,
Gold Severum x1
Silver Dollars x6 (3 Red Hook & 3 Spotted)
Redfin Prochilodus x1

Out of that group I have no problems with the Oscars. The problem fish is the flagtail who has become territorial and chases his silver dollar tankmates around. He wont mess with the cichlids at all. Instead of a group of tinfoils a single flagtail might work with an Oscar.

I would watch that RD. normally too aggressive for oscars and growing just as big... If you want to ditch a cichlid or 2 you can add a shoal of silver dollars... They will bring out the cichlid more in the open...esp when they are young.

In a 125, I suggest with the oscar, a selection of milder CA/SA cichlids and a medium catfish or two.

Maybe

1 Oscar
1 GT
1 JD
1 Vieja synspilum
a couple of medium fancy plecos(look for those who get to about 10-12 inches, like a sunshine)

I would not get something too aggressive like Red devils or slow growing like clown loaches...

Vieja Synspilum will nip at the Oscar when they are smaller and possible kill it when they get older. In my experience Jack Dempseys don't get along with them. Be careful with catfish, especially Pictus because they can kill the Oscar if it tried to eat them.

Blood Parrots always get along with them, I know the OP mentioned them.

I've kept a group of 4 Angels with my pair of Oscars no worries - just get decent sized ones and it may work out. Silver Dollars are probably a safer bet though since they're faster and grow quickly.
