Oscar tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It could work but I'd worry about the Oscars out competing it or beating on it in that case.ebjd are fragile for a cichlid

So true. Went through 2 of them. Finally gave in and am now raising one in a 10 gallon til it gets 2-3in. Try tinfoil barbs. They are great dithers and work well in my 240 gallon with 2 6-7in tiger Oscar, jaguar, 3 geos. I have 6 tinfoil barbs and they are always targeted by the Oscars. The jaguar and Oscars get along well.

t-bar cichlids are pretty cool, also blue acara are like mini green terrors, always got convicts maybe hrp? other than the said above silver dollars ect maybe a smaller species of spiny eel (smaller brothers of the fire eel, theres info in the stickys) will work too, they are pretty cool... oh and people have forgot plecos too!-)

No plecos make more of a mess than they clean up. I would put 4 sliver dollars in while your O,s are growing, bigger than your O if you can find them. Rehome 2 Oscars as soon as the aggression level rises in the tank which will probably be soon. Give them plenty of clean water and watch them grow. My Oscar grew from 2-3" to a 13" monster in 18 months in a 75 gallon tank with 2 fluval canister filters and water changes done twice a week (50% min each time).

Some of us like pleco for reasons other than just cleaning up lol

IMHO, a group of severums would look much nicer than SDs and have the same bio-load as tinfoils. I've found SD's too skittish and would ram the sides of a 8 foot tank during a water change.
