So I know Oscars are fairly tame when compared to most other cichlids, but I have a lone 7" Oscar in a 48"Lx24"Wx18"H tank...my LFS got some fantastic looking 3-4" red head Tapajos geos in from Jeff Rapps that I have been eye balling for a while now. I have never kept any geo's and was wondering if 5-7 of them would be fine with the oscar for a while or if the mixing is just out of the question bad juju?

Thats a crap shoot. The geos are fast and constantly on the move sifting the sand or gravel. If it is an agressive oscar could cause promblems yet I

Sorry hit wrong key, as I was saying if Oscar is agressive it will not work yet I have had real docile ones that would not bother the geos. I currnetly have 6 red head tapajos (growouts) with a 12 inch cactus pleco. The cactus does not bother them at all. but my adult geophagus albios at 8 inches I had to remove because they woulod have swallowed the red heads. I would really watch but the oscar is not that big so it should be ok.

Maybe if the tank was taller, but being so short you putting them all within the same swimming level.

the tank is fine all depends on the oscar, i would only try it if i had another tank ready to move the oscar into.

My oscar has been living with my Geophagus brachybranchus for nearly 4 years, i would consider them a perfect match as far as companionship goes the oscar is messy and the geo cleans the crap from the sand. I also had 2 Satanoperca leucosticta and a red head tapajos for years too with no problems. I guess its just hit or miss with an oscar but i have had good success.

I would say...in a smaller tank no, but if the tank is large enough I would imagine it would be possible if the Geophagus were a safe size compared to the Oscar

Thanks everyone, I will re-evaluate the geo's size tommorow and talk to the LFS owner and see if we can work out a "if this dosent work out can I rehouse one or the other with you?" type deal.
