Oscar troubles

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hang on just a wee second,,,,,you said you made him a cave with pcv piping<hot gun glue? and rocks.....was the glue purchased from a fish shop? most glue is not advised to use in fish tanks<not sure if there actually is any glue you can use, just sylicone.....
if i was you i would be inclined to remove the cave you made and maybe get a terracotta flowerpot,,, i know you said this ones died, but iam sure you will purchase again,,,
how was this fish proir to falling ill? and round this time was the cave you made in this tank?

also as stated above, are you sure you want to grow and fully a house an oscar within the year?
there are plenty of smaller cichlids out there, if your wanting aggresive cichlids<which oscars are not, then your better of with convicts/salvini/these are window bangers<well the con i had was as is my salvini now

That sucks. I've actually had better luck as far as disease with WalMart fish, but only from one particular WalMart for some reason. 1st thing to always do is check ammonia, nitrites, nitrates with a liquid test kit. Don't just assume your water's 'fine' and that the tank's cycled if you don't check those things regularly. Also, be wary of "putting 40 guppys in" without quarrantine. Feeder fish aren't good nutrition for an Oscar anyway. Just some suggestions. He probably *was sick when you got him. But no one can say that for sure without test results from your own water.

Dont get me wrong, I know what I was getting myself into. I am not the casual fish buyer, I do research the fish i get. I am aware of how huge the oscar would have gotten and am getting a tank this weekend, the breeder was strictly a grow out. I tested the water 5 times before putting any fish in, my parameters were fine (my particular test didnt test for ammonia however) The ph, nitrites, and nitarte levels were all acceptable. the oscar was never really too active, he mostly jsut sat in the corner and only fed on a few platys when I wasnt looking. he was eating though so i figure he would get used to his new home and become more outgoing and dominant later (this was all before the cave btw, I put the cave in so he would use it instead of sitting in a corner, he looked very uneasy)
The rocks for the cave were aquarium substrate, and I read here that hot glue once dried is acceptable? Im jsut not sure what happened, and feel bad for him dying, especially since I cant figure out why. As soon as he started not eating bloodworms and not coming out, I didt a 30% water change for two days in a row, and tried beef heart. I only used the guppies as a last resort, hoping his instinct would make him eat the live food swimming in front of his face. The platys, danios and now baby guppies are all fine (but they are pretty hardy so that doesnt say much) I wouls jsut like to know what happened before moving further.

Looks like it may not be your fault. Sometimes fish die. Could have been something already wrong with it. I would remove the hot glue tunnel, just in case.

not to sound cruel man but oscars are wierd, when there babies there so so delicate, yet once they hit a certain size.. there impossible to kill .. sorry to here though man, good luck next time...

Yea, sounds like you did everything right. It also sounds like you were using the paper dip sticks to test (hence the absence of an ammon test?). The only possible future suggestion I would have is to get an API liquid test tube kit. The strips are worthless, although water quality doesn't sound like it was the problem in either case. For what it's worth I've read over and over on different forums that hot glue is completely inert/non-toxic once dry. I've used it many times to plug small holes so Loaches wouldn't get stuck. It doesn't hold up real well over time to hold stones together but I believe it to be safe for fish from my experience with it.

Yeah the tank is completely cycled, What will raising the temp do? IS this under the assuption he is sick? He will not eat, ive tried putting gupies in there just now and still nothing, why is he not an aggressive, personality-having, terretorial fish-eating oscar that I want?>

Trust me you don't want a angry fish its what i ahve and i can barely put up with him lol :grinno:

wal-mart fish are always sick lesson learned. Try to explore more into the cichlid world instead of buying an oscar unless u are thinking of keeping another one for life cause they are pritty hard to get rid of when they get older. Just my opinion tho.

This is true they can live up to 15 years so think about what your getting :D
