Oscar with feeders in tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will also add that you can feed your Oscar more healthier fresh food if that is your goal. Earthworms, chopped shrimp, vegetables, and even crickets are great foods to add to your Oscar's diet. I personally don't feed my fish any goldfish or rosies. I supply them with enough food between the pellets and fresh food. The whole goldfish/rosie debate is something that I rather not get into. Just read up on the topic yourself and make your own decision. I hope your Oscar continues to have a long and healthy life.

very well put

thanks guys... i wasnt worried about the ethics and all that. I just was wondering if keeping goldfish in the tank all the time bad for him. I thought maybe it would effect the oxygen in the tank and stuff like that if i kept them in there all the time
thanks

If you keep more fish than your filtration can handle, you will have water and health problems. Since goldfish and Oscars both produce a lot of waste, I would suggest that if you are going to keep goldfish or rosies that you limit the amount of feeders to just a few and have plenty of aeration.

My favorite way to explain food is as follows:

Imagine someone who eats a good variety of foods. Some salads, some meats, some fruits, some milk and cheese, and every once in a while some treats.

Now imagine someone who eats only McDonald's.

It's best to feed your O a variety of pellets and frozen foods. Bloodworms, Glass worms, Tubifex worms, Pellets, Spirulina pellets etc.

The person who only eats McDonald's is the fish that only eats feeder fish. If you feed them only goldfish, they'll develop a fatty liver. However if you buy and breed your own Guppies, they'll be much healthier. They can eat guppies every once in a while, but Goldfish should be kept to a minimal.

Lol, I like that analogy.

Maybe add :

"Now imagine someone who eats only McDonald's that is ripe with parasites"

Cyprinids contain thiaminase. That includes rosy reds and goldfish. If you must feed him live fish, use a non-cyprinid tropical species and raise them yourself to avoid parasites.

yeah get like a 10g and throw some guppies in there, before you know it you will have more feeders than you can handle, but yeah a diet of only goldfish/rosy reds is very unhealthy and fatty, these fish have very little nutrition, the analogy to Mcdonalds is a very good one, besides the fact of there being a high risk of parasitic infection it is just extremely unhealthy and will lead to either the development of HITH or a very shortened lifespan. every once in awhile if they have been throughly quarantined (for 2 weeks at least, but this is very annoying which is why i dont bother feeding these feeders) then it should be ok as a very minimal treat, but he may like them better but its like a child with candy, of course the child is going to choose the candy over actual food but its your job as the parent to make sure they eat healthy. like others have said there are other great options that your O will love just as much, earthworms are always a favorite along with pretty much any insect they can get their mouths on (i usually catch grasshoppers now and then when im outside in the summer and chuck them in there) but easiest way to give full diet is to get him on a staple of pellets and then just give treats of the other foods

after all that in short, to answer your question, as long as your tank and filttration are large enough to handle the bioload of an oscar and very messy goldfish then no, its not bad to have the extra fish in the tank but if your water quality is suffering because of it then yes it is bad, how big is your tank by the way?
