Maybe set up the oscar with some other mellow cichlids in another tank.
Yeah, it sounds as though if I want a Jag, he might end up being by himself. Also, if I want to keep an Oscar it might have to be with some dither fish, like timfoils or silver dollars. Just out of curiosity, has anyone kept a jag with dither fish instead of other cichlids?

oscars and a few silver dollars would probably be ok in that size tank. tinfoil barbs grow twice the size of silver dollars so they'd do better in an even larger tank, imo.

with a jag, you might be able to get away with silver dollars, it's kind of hard to say. the one good thing is that silver dollars are very fast swimmers so they probably wouldn't get damaged too much but there's the chance they could get chased around all the time which would be pretty stressful for them.

Stress could definately come into play and I wouldn't want ick in the tank to deal with all the time. These big guys can certainly be a problem trying to keep them with anything. I would probably go with timfoils and the Oscar. I know every time I've had silver dollars they were a very busy fish, and that was with no cichlids in the tank. Its hard to judge what one of these big guys is going to do. I don't mind experimenting with trying to mix fish with each other, I would just like to keep fatalities to a minimum.

yes i have 2 silver sharks and three 11+inch tinfoils/catfish / birchir and they are fine with these its just cichlids i find
