Oscar's and African Cichlids.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive never tried mbuna with an oscar, I did have a bunch of mbuna with a devil, a dempsey, a terror, and some cons though. Had an Auratus try to go after my devil once when my devil was still a juvinile. Auratus got a beat down and that was the last of any kind of agression between the africans and the americans.

i dont know-i think mbuna would beat the crap out of an oscar and stress it into not eating. you could try if its just temporary, but i wouldnt. i wouldnt put my oscar with my mbuna.

Yeah, thanks for all the comments guys. The thing that's going on here is that I have one 75gal with a 8" Jardini Arowana & 10" STCF,I had originally bought this same oscar like 4 months ago when he was 4",and tried putting it in my Aro 75gal.My Aro turned out to be one really nasty mean ass fish,he was constently picking on the oscar.I had to pull the Aro out and give him to my stepdad or my Aro would have killed him.

So my stepdad tried putting the oscar in with his 14" Jardini 75gal.It turned out that they both got along fine. There was never any agression towards the oscar at all.So my stepdad kept him for like a few months to build up his size. Then my stepdad told me since the oscar was a lot bigger now that I could try bringing him back over to my place and see if he'll make it my Aro.I did and it still didn't work.My stepdad ended up taking him back for a few more months. He then asked me again the other day if I wanted to try take him back again, now by this time the oscar is like 7".I really thought the oscar was going to make it this time...I was wrong! The Jardini was far more brutal this time around. He was hitting the oscar so hard that I could hear the thump from where I was, 10' away. He would approach the oscar and then coil him self up and then strike him as hard as he could, the oscar did not defend himself at all.

So I pulled the oscar out and put him with my Africans fot the meantime until I find him a home.I thought too that the Mbunas would screw with him but it seems they are doing fine.I plan on either selling the oscar here or donating him to a pet store ASAP.

^^I appreciate the fact that you try to recreate natural habitats but really its pointless because by the time you get any non wild caught african or american cichlid, they have already been bread for generations and generations in the same water conditions. It would be like if your great grandparents lived in phoenix arizona all their lives but your grandparents moved to higher elevation in say like colorado or something like 60 years ago. Lived their whole lives in higher elevation, as did your parents. By the time you come around is it really important to try and recreat the same environment for "you" that your great grandparents live in multiple generations before you? That would be a negative. You would be so occustomed to the higher elevation conditions that it wouldnt make a difference to you one bit. Its the same way reguarding PH levels and fish who have been bread for generations apon generations etc etc etc in the same breeding pools togeather. Wild caught fish excluded of course.

That is the worst analogy I have ever heard.

Thanks for the gesture NavyGirl and nice to see ya again.:)

But,yeah I love the look of the Auratus,I plan on getting another one here pretty soon.

sg1-well said-I get tired of hearing how PH levels are different 99% of the fish we get are raised in tanks-not wild caught.
depends on what africans you have-mbuna-maybe temporary-other large ones like Hap. Comp. Living Stoni T. Chromis would do fine.

shamrock is right when it comes to haps, for the most part, you can keep something like an oscar with haps as long as the aggression level is close, and the tank is large. The problem mixing mbuna with oscars is due to aggression level and also diet

Well thank you I appreciate that, I tried to explain to him how it works with fishfarm fish and all he has to say to me is that my analogy is stupid. I guess if you cannot refute someone else's point with a counterpoint its only human nature to resort to personal attacks. But despite his personal attack I wish he really would have read and understood what I was trying to explain to him because its a fact and thats just how it is. Contrary to what he may believe Im not just making this up lol

I guess your right, even though in what I was saying, PH is only one of the factors that make up the difference. I will concede that you made a valid point, but that analogy was stupid.:grinyes: C'mon.
