Whats wrong with cheerios. Lots of vitamins, they pretty much disintegrate when wet, they don't inflate with water. A couple every day would probably be pretty good for the fish.

I feed cereal. Just stay away from the sugar coatings. Cheerios ok Fruit Loops bad.
Most fish also like cooked cereals. Like oat meal, cream of wheat, mixed grain stuff like Sunny Boy.
Let it cool, drop a ball of it in the tank.
It's solid enough to hold together, but soft enough for even small fish to nibble.
They love it. A little variety is good. I don't see how grain is going to hurt them.
They just don't like bananas. Maybe it feels like rotten meat.

Not great that the kid is throwing things in the tank but cheerios is actually a good choice.If he likes them its a good addition to his diet.
Ha Ha. I fed them each one today and all their colors came out and they liked it. The little runt thinks she's a marine biologist now.
