OSCARS FULL SIZE!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Best measurement I can get on zues, my avatar, is about 11in. He is a rescue, so don't know how old he is. Have had him about a year though. Have three others all about 9-10 inches and about a year and half old.

They look awesome. I had a tiger years ago that would let me pet him and would even swim into my hand if I cupped it in the tank. And they know their owners as I was the only one in the family that he would do it to.

Hi,

I really mean no offense by this at all, Danny.

But 5 years and only 7 inches?

I'm surprised nobody has asked.
What size tank do you keep them in?
Do you think it's possible you may have stunted their growth?
I know that at 2 years old they are very capable of reaching over 10inches in captivity, given the right conditions. This is through personal experience as well.
My best friend has one that's at least 10" and he's only had it for 1.5 years now.

The Oscars will grow much faster during it's younger age, then slow down.
They grow very rapidly up to about 9inches and then slow down thereafter.

I worry that your Oscars may have been stunted.

Just my 2cents!

Im sorry you have misunderstood my earlier post, I have been interested in the Oscar fish for 5 years or so but have only just bought a tank big enough to house them and now can share in the enjoyment of owning them.

I have had my 2 Oscars for just under 6 months now and as i have said, they have reached a size of 7 inches and still growing.

Also,
Could someone please tell me how to pet Oscars because as soon as i put my hand in the fish tank, they swim away, but approach the front of the tank when my hand is outside and on the screen.

Thanks again for all the pics and info, if there any problems that i should be made aware of, i will be greatful of any advice.

Petting him may not be possible. Some oscars stay skittish, mine doesn't sulk very often even after large water changes. But I know that others are big sulkers, they will hide from anthing. You could start by just having ur fingers in the water and maybe he will get comfortable with them over time. Although I must add that its not very good to pet them regularly.

why is it sometimes not good to pet them?

This is kind of a older pic, but my O's are over 3 years old and 13 inches.

An Oscars immune system greatly depends on the slime coat of the fish, petting a fish removes the slime coat. Also the petting of fish is for your benifit not the fish. Fish really aren't all into cuddling.
