about 6-7 months then he will need at least a 90 gallon for life.

spoken like a true oscar lover.:D
As we're talking minimum tanksize very often, seeing full grown oscars makes me realize they love some swimming room.

I'd much rather have a 6'x18" footprint for an Oscar as an absolute minimum. I have two 15" Oscars. They'd barely have any room to swim in a 4' tank. If he started on one end and stopped at the other, there's only 18" difference there. Keep your fishes happy and you will be happy.

depends on how old he is when you put him in... if he is a fry, then prolly 2.5 years, but if you get them when they are 4-6 inches then less obviously, and if you get them at 6-8 inches, then a few months max, and thats with weekly 30-50% water changes

i have 2 oscars about 6 inches each. i cant see an oscar in a 55 on account of how fast they grow and how big they can get. heck i have to divide my tank cause my pair of cons are harassing my oscars ( will soon get rid of the female con but not tell the frys all grow up or tell the reach an inch then im going to take out the divider and get rid of my female con, hoply my oscars will eat all the baby cons ) but one oscar alone should require a 75 min NOT a 55.. unless its one of those weird 55s that are 4 foot long 15 wide 19 or 20 high. so no an oscar needs a 75 min.

I agree with the comment that a 6ft tank is a good place to be with oscars . . . and 18" wide . . .

if I couldn't go 6ft long, I'd still prioritize the 18" wide . . . so, nothing smaller than 75G or 90G for one Oscar . . . that's what I would do
