My parents are moving into a new house and want a large tank to serve as the middle section of a dividing wall between the living room and kitchen. It's going to be a little while before we actually set it up, but I wanted to go ahead and get started with the planning.

For stock, jaguars are a definite (have always wanted some). Midas and oscars are also on the list of ideas (already own and love them). Maybe... 1-2 jags, 2-4 midas, and/or 2-4 oscars? Do you think the oscars would fair well with these other cichlids?

Please make your suggestions (and if you own any of these species and have some nice photos of them, please post them!)

Also, due to the large size aquarium, quality construction is a MUST. What are some manufacturers to look into? What are some to avoid?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Hi, how big is the proposed tank?

Oscars with Red Devils and Jag's not a great idea imo. If you wanted tankmates with these other guys, best to go with more aggressive and capable fish then O's.

The Oscars wouldn't fair well with the Devils & Jags. People always think Oscars are so aggressive yet that's only with each other or fish that'll fit in their mouths :-) They're no match for the 'real' tough guys.

unless the tank is enourmous then don't put oscars in there. Oscars are aggressive compared to comunity fish, but in the world of cichlids they have a medium to low aggression level. depending on the aggression level of the jag(s) that you have the red devils could be in trouble too. i'm not sure if you understand exactly hat your dealing with. Jaguars are (overall) a hyper aggressive cichlids that can get up to 16 inches. The only way that you will realistically be able to keep more than one would be to have a breeding pair. (and then everything else in the tank will die quickly)

basically jags and red devils could possibly go together. it just depends on the individual fish. (some jags might be less aggressive than the red devil or it may claim the whole tank for it self)

the main question i have is what is the rough estimate of the size of the tank?

no oscars.

ya oscars are a risk. i have seen it done many times but still its a risk cuz u never know how ur fish are when it comes to personality and generally oscars always get beat on in my experience. i had a jag, jd, and oscar in mine and the oscar was the only one that had to come out.

How big is the tank gonna be...dimensions? If 240 or larger Id say some cichla(peacock bass). You can get some really nice ones at the moment for a good deal. They are super colorful and as active as dogs. CICHLA's!

Oops, forgot to mention the size off the tank...

It will be a 240g minimum (in which case I will probably get a single jag and a few midas), but I'm leaning more towards a 300g tall (96x24x31) or a 300g wide (96x30x25) in hopes to curb some of the aggression

Okay, so oscars are out. Kind of figured that wouldn't work.

Any suggestions for other ca/sa species that would be able to hold their own against a jag?

Get the wide tank why not look into something from the midas complex or more parachromis species. Try to keep the fish all the same sex or you might end up with a pair.
