Oscars 'schooling' in resort pond

Cool video.

Loose shoals are quite normal in nature, and I agree with Celebrist, the antisocial way oscars and many cichlids act in most aquariums, is what's out of the ordinary.
Agree with this, including what I've seen in wild video in my own tanks where I've kept groups of severums or other species most people don't keep in groups, and in other tanks, where I've seen adult A. rivulatus groups (gold seam, made for a beautiful tank), adult oscar groups, etc., just takes a large enough tank, in some cases a large enough group, to bring out the social behavior.

Depends on species of course, don't think you'll see many schools of adult northern pike or muskie. :)

We don't see too many wild caught fish for sale here in oz due to the quarantine laws. It's hypocritical of me but I wouldn't mind having something wild but I would feel bad about it if I'd seen it swimming around in a nice big pond before I caught it myself.

Like the new avatar too, I hope everyone settles on one soon as it's getting hard to recognise anyonE as they keep changing every few days.

Ha ha yeah just trying to toe the new TOS line a bit better, my last avatar with beach/sea was tenuous at best, esp. as I'm not even a reefer. So I'll have to settle for my homely looking GHXB's mug :)

Thx Neutrino, good points -- and your last one reminds me that besides a species things, another factor is the species' position/level in any given environmental scenario. So those Oscars could be shoaling/schooling due to just being relaxed and in a big pond (likely), or in fact it might be (at least partially) a predation response due to even larger fish ruling the water, not sure.

As FINWIN FINWIN suggested I need to bring an Action Cam along some time and get some underwater footage (or maybe just bring some bread lol, that'll bring out the beasts; I've seen glimpses of them but not during last couple of visits).
