Also that's not a Johanni, it's a melanochromis chipokae. The chipokae gets bigger(7") and is a lot meaner than the johanni. It is possibly THE most aggressive mbuna species around.

I belive you are correct... I have done some reading and this is a pretty agressive AFRICAN ciclid... so far the king of my tank (Tiger Oscar) has put him in his place. I just did a large water change (Nitrates were @ 20) and every one has settled down in the tank... as of right now, all fish seem to be happy... I will watch them closely to make sure they all play nice together. If they dont, then I will have to seperate them...
I really like my new fish...his color is so cool. ;)

i wouldnt try to keep any Africans with Oscars...fail waiting to happen

Yeah Id take it back. I had a 8'' male venustus with my oscar and my oscar beat him up bad. And he was a big boy too and the dominate male of my african tank.

good luck. Id imagine theres a chance you could make it for quite a while, just make sure your oscar doesnt get hungry when hes full grown.

well when I got up this morning, all wasn't good.... the Chipokae was wearing out all the fish in the tank. The Oscar's were being chased so hard, they were running into the glass... It look as if all my fish were terrified of him... so I removed him from the tank....

Lesson learned.....:(

This could work i have done it before but you got the worst african you could possibly get a chipokae!!! I had them kill dovii's, red devils, jacks, jags and the list goes on. Pound for pound to me its the toughest cichlid hope you find a way to keep him.

friend has had 1 15in Oscar with 10African Cichlids for about 4-5 years now with no problems...the Africans are to small and quick for the Oscar to catch them...and she seems to show no interest at all in trying to catch them.
