Oscars?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi,

I really enjoy my Oscars i would say they are one of my favourite cichlids they really are like another pet ie dog etc.

Young ones are like little puppies and they are always begging for food.

Anyway heres a few pictures.

I want a oscar but i dont and cant get a 75G..i have a 55g long and thats all i can get till i live on my own. The oscar debate between a 55 and 75 always gave good points for the 75G.

Please ignore the dirty glass. I was going down to clean the aquarium and saw Gus leading around the tiger barbs, and I just had to get a picture immediately. His best friend was a blood parrot named Casper. Casper got sick and died, and Gus quit swimming after that. ;_; He loved his tiger barb friends too, as you can see.

RIP good buddy.

And just a note to Yellow_Perch, while I fully believe oscars should have a 75 gallon, my Dad kept two alive in a 55 gallon for 12 years, and they were actually happy. So, /shrug. I guess it depends on the fish.

That is amazing..i do want one but a community seems better

I was young at the time, but I remember he had two mounted filters on the back and an undergravel filter. Knowing what I know now, he probably had to do lots of water changes as well. But, they made it! One day, I want to have another 75 gallon with an oscar/blood parrot friendship, but I don't have any more room for more tanks! /emo

Yea that would be neat

Keep in mind .. that with a community you won't necessarily have any favorites and with an oscar ... he will be the star. I love my oscars and love coming home to see them ... sometimes say hi to them before the fiance :) lol. He gets a little jealous.

But they are so fun. They love seeing me come up to the glass or even in to the room.

You could start in a 55 and keep an eye on craigslist for a bigger tank. You'd have a good year before you would need to upgrade probably, as a 55 normally will work as a minimum anyway (though yes 75 is desirable because you stress them less - less water changes, less need for you to do WC etc).

I say go for it. Communities can be boring. But wait until you find one that catches your eye!

Here are mine... The tiger was my first, went back not long later and got the lutino (not actually an albino as petstores label them - this is a marketing tool), and then I just got the red one recently and though he is smaller, he packs the most punch right now I think!

And here is my fave ... the red with probably 10 pellets in his mouth ... LOL certainly decided he was going to be the pig of the tank

Good luck and happy fishkeeping!
