I love Oscars, but I think it comes down to what is really going to work in the long run; of course its possible to keep them in (lets say) a 55, but you're looking at an uphill battle in maintaining water quality as well as not being able to appreciate them having swimming space.
I've heard a guideline of tank size being 6 times the fish' overall length, and double its length in width, (height negotiable)which I'd tend to agree with. This would come out at a 6 foot tank for Oscars, and would be my personal guideline.
