poor fishies

i hope that they will be ok if they are in a tank that small

Oscars would have to be one of the most abused fish out there. It's a shame that they are so hardy because it ultimately means that they can suffer a whole lot more than other fish before they die, so in turn people believe that these small tanks and poor conditions are ok because "I had an Oscar in a 29 for 3 years until it died and it was fine".

They don't seem to question why other peoples Os live for over a decade and instead just buy another poor fish; and that's the other problem, Os are just too cheap and readily available. But the laws of supply and demand are always gonna win in the end.

Unfortunately you are correct. I hear something like that almost daily. All you can do is try to educate them and hope it snowballs.

what is the minimum tank size for an adult oscar? I have a friend who works at petsmart who contends that the minimum is 30 as long as you have only one oscar in there. that seems fishy to me.

I'd go with a 75g

a lot of people i know say a 55 gallon is the smallest tank you can have an oscar in. Anything bigger is a bonus. I have two in a 7 1/2 foot tank and there is no way i would put another one in

I have a 55g community tank and I look at it sometimes and I just can't imagine putting an O in there. There's just not enough room. And as for a 30g, that's just a joke. Sure it will do ok for a while and then will die a 'mystery' death due to poor water quality way before it should. That's in the unlikely event it doesn't get HITH or something first. Honestly, if someone told me a 30 would be ok I don't think I would ever listen to a thing he said about fish again, but that's just me

I have a customer with three in a 55. Comes in complaining that his two tigers are ganging up on the albino, what should I do. I tell him get a much bigger tank and/or split them up. He thinks the answer is get another albino so it's even. Told him no.
