Bump?

How's the aggression level with your guys? Mine are a little snippy

Do they really grow that slowly or are you just being facetious ? lol
I like the way the adults look. Do they mix well with severum?

I bought a group of 5 heterospilus in Sept. 2016 from CotA. They were each between 3-3.5". As of today, if the largest is 5" I'd be surprised. they definitely do grow that slowly lol. that same month I got a group of Thorichthys panchovillai (mixteco blue) that were in the 1-1.5" range. The male from my pancho breeding pair is now larger than any of the heterospilus.

They are beautiful though and even at this size they're showing very nice colors. IMO they look better on a dark substrate compared to light. I had them for a while on a very light tan sand but now they're on black sand. :)

Mine I bought from a breeder on Facebook. I got them when they were probably about an inch max. Now they are about 2 or maybe a little more in about 4 months. I have 8 of them in a 75 with 5 sajicas about the same size. I'll be putting them in a 135 in a few months.

I have noticed they are a little nippy but nothing too bad. The sajicas are bidding then around for now. Here are a few shots I took this morning

So 5.5 months later have they grown at all?

Really curious about their growth rate as there is very little info.

Are they slow growers relative to other vieja that get much larger or like the calvis from Tanganyika, there is no noticeable size change in a 1 yr

Most of them were around 1 to 1.25 inches when I got them. Now i'd say most are pushing 3 inches if not a little more than 3 in the 9 months I've had them. There is obvious growth but I would say they are living up to their rep as far as slow growers. They are good eaters. I feed them a mix of krill, shrimp, and spirulina flakes from kens fish as well as omega one shrimp pellets, NLS thera a, NLS Float, and omega one kelp pellets. They pretty much eat it all. Right now they are in a 135 gallon with a pair of gold severums and a pair of sajicas. The sajicas are about their size and the male sev is about 7 inches while the female is a little more than 5.

Thanks for the update-

9 months in, would you chose this species again?

I think they look great but I’m back and forth between these bifas and breidhori

I think it just depends on what you are looking for. I was looking for a large fish with a non-typical coloration that was big enough to be interesting, but small enough that I could keep 1 or 2 in a 125/135g tank and still have some other large fish in there. It's my understanding that bifas are a bit more aggressive and breidohri typically get larger. I also like that these are more rare than the others it seems. I was really torn between these and the Breidohri but considering I was not able to get a 180 or larger in the space I had planned, the choice was a bit easier for me.
