I Just got myself a couple lil jack dempseys, and im wondering what type of fish i could have in my 38 gallon tank that they wouldn't eat...i don't want anything overly large...but maybe something not as aggresive.. i don't know..im open to suggestions. thanks:nilly:

Nothing else IMO. The jack will out grow that tank.

how long will it take for them to out grow the tank if there almost an inch now. i could place other fish in there now until the jacks get big enough to eat them.. right.. could i put any kind of fish in there? cheap ones anyways..lol.. gotta please the girlfriend... she doesn't know what the jacks are capable of though...lol

i say you have about six to eight months before the jacks completely outgrow that tank. only fish you can put in there that aren't big will be food within a couple of months.

Depens on how much you feed them, water, etc. My JD's grew 2'' to 8'' (m) in 4 months. If i didn't power feed, it would have been 6 to 8 months to grow 6'' to 8''.

Bump up to a 55g. That would be sufficient enough for 2 Dempseys.

Maybe add a Nicarguenses, Convict, Firemouth, Severum, rainbow cichlid? Not all of them but a few select would work!

what are the dimensions on your 38 gallon tank? you might be good for quite a while
My Tank size is 40.9"L x 10.6"W x 20.3"H

When I grow my Dempseys out in large tanks, they grow quickly...
When I grow my Dempseys out in small tanks, they grow slowly...

This is why many people believe that Dempseys grow slow, because they slow their growth with small tanks... I'm not saying this is cruel or wrong or anything like that, just sharing facts I've learned through experience...

I feel that a 9"+ Dempsey needs to be in a 48" x 18" footprint or bigger, to prevent him from having issues of a bent spine. I also understand not every Dempsey gets that large, especially females. Smaller growing Dempseys usually will not get a bent spine in a 55 gal, but larger growing ones often do.

I definitely would not add any more Cichlids to your 38 gal tank. But feel free to add whatever smaller non-aggressive "community fish" such as Tetras and the like. In time, the Dempseys will grow large enough to eat them, but by that time you will have already needed to upgrade them from the 38 gal.

Also keep in mind that as adults, Dempseys are solitary fish or pairing fish. meaning they do not want to hang around their own kind, unless they are a breeding pair. So if you have two males they will almost certainly fight for dominancy and the tougher of the two will suppress/stress the other. Two females are less likely to do this to the extreme, but are rarely "friends" either. If you have a male female then they will most likely pair off and make you many many babies.

It'll be tight but would work. Highly recommend a touch more of a tank. Don't really recommend any tank mates either until you can upgrade.

I believe that Dempseys get to about 9" or so?

Someone will chime in and correct me!
