I was at work tonight and was transferring a 12" Lima Cat into a tank from a bucket. I did not want to use a net and he was too big for a specimen container so I get the bright Idea to just scoop him with my hand....

Holy hell those spines leave one nasty poke. I have been spined by a lot of cats and it hurts for a bit but this one got me right in the end of my middle finger. I managed to get him into the tank and then noticed it was bleeding pretty good. I start to go clean it up when a lady started asking me a lot of questions about some fish. I am standing there with my hand throbbing and tucked behind my back so she will not see the blood. When I answered all her questions I turn and look down and my hand it covered in blood and it is dripping onto the floor. I go clean it off and wash it with Anti-bacteria soap. I then procede to go get the first aid kit to clean it a little better since it is swelling up and there is some discoloration. First aid kit is nowhere to be found so I just put a band aid on it. I go back to working for about 10 mins and my arm started throbbing all the way past my elbow. I tell everyone I am going to the drugstore for some stuff and drove the longest 3 miles on earth....... If I had a way I think I might have cut my damn finger off as it was hurting like hell. I finally get there and grab some antibiotic ointment, quick acting extra strenght pain relivers, hydrogen peroxide, first aid kit, finger cots, and liquid bandage (amazing all the stuff you grab when you cannot think straight due to pain. I get to my car eat 6 of the pain pills. Wash out the wound with peroxide (note trying to press out the wound while it is covered in peroxide takes you to the next level of pain) get the antibiotic cream on and drive back to work in a much less erattic way.....

Not sure if it was the depth of the puncture or my reaction to this fish's slime but that was very very painful....... It took about 45 mins after the pain pills and the ointment for it to stop throbbing so watch yourselves...

Lima Catfish 1 Tony 0 I got my butt kicked by a catfish......

So what do you do with an animal like that..... I brought him home but I poured him into his new tank.....

heh ouch got any pic's?

I know what you mean about the peroxide thing. I crashed my rocket a few years back and tore all the skin off my fore arm. Me being the hard ass I thought I was decided not to go to the hospital and went to the local walgreens and grabbed some bandage, peroxide and a pot scrubber. One friend held me down, another one dumped the peroxide and the other one scrubbed out the asphalt. Pain doesn't describe the feeling, lol.

yea they do hurt like crazy a while back i got stuck by one it was bad so i sold him to a friend........ then he found out y i sold it for like 5 bucks at 15 inchs lol.

I got a little poke by my 20" RTCxTSN so I just covered him in a wash rag and It was much easier. I would rather a rag then those fish gloves any day. I have had to "net" out a few big fish in the past month.

I've been stabbed by many different fish but I have noticed that catfish do hurt way more than others. Possible that they have toxins in their spines like scats?

My uncle is an aquarist a a large aquarium and he was moving a motoro ray and is stabbed him right in the soft meat of your hand straight in between the pointer finger and the thumb. it went in about an inch and a half, and he said it was the worst pain he has felt in his life. lol but it is a good story. I my self have only been hit by a couple bullheads and it was not that bad but. lol idk

need pics haha

limas hurt worse than any other cat, spine wise.
the only one that came close to comparison was a TSN only the TSN was doube the size

that's what i was thinking. I thought i had read an article that said that Lima's produce a slight venom. It was in AFI if i remember correctly.
