How long have you guys kept Dorado?

I couldn't find the pics, but Peter63 can attest to the damage Dorado are capable of. He shipped me 3 and 2 of them were just shredded upon arival. Wounds were very similar. Nothing but 3 Dorado in 1 bag.......

Another 750 just for the Aimara? LOL. Not gonna happen. After it grows mean, eats all my rays, kills all the fish it's housed with, then comes after me in my sleep I'll just sell it, or house it in one of the many spare tanks. Really don't think a lil foot long wolf needs a 10x4 footprint unless the thing starts taking roids, as growthrate hasn't been all that impressive.

It's really too bad you guys can't grab a seat and watch how Aimara interact with other fish. Everyone thought cohabbing ATF was impossible when first introduced to the hobby, just like Armatus..... Now it's not uncommon to see these things with other fish. Only reason you don't see Aimara in the same situation is cause the price hasn't dropped out the bottom like the Hydros (cynus and lycus).

This brings up the question... Will aimara work in a comm tank? Its worked for a while now but how long will it last? Will you seperate now? After his next attack? After a ray gets bit?

Not saying this will or will not happen again but this is prob why this combo isnt tried very often. Seems to me its just like an armatus... You can only cage the beast for so long lol

Does you large armatus still live with tankmates? Which ones?

Trev's giant Armatus "Fang" passed a long time ago....

With that fish passed away many dreams of any of us keeping them till they get large. If you were around when this fish died you'd understand why lots of us such as myself have no hope of ever raising these things to monster size.... If the guys with giant tanks breeding rays can't keep them alive I don't know who can.

Everyone gets them, raises them to 12-18" in no time then what? They die. If they didn't you wouldn't be hard pressed to find pics of a giant in a tank.

Interesting thread.

I think a lot of us want to believe Aimaras are complete socially inept creatures that will attack anything & everything for it is the essence of a monster fish, but as DB Junkie has pointed out - more and more keepers are successfully keeping them together with tank mates. Of course, there are variations of individual fish "personality", introductory method, set up environment, etc, etc.

I can't speak of the durability of these cohabitation, but one thing is for sure.. one needs a big wallet and a lot of guts.

Thank you for sharing and keep us updated.

My first thought was the other dorado bc I noticed the tail. Could have been a combination of the two but tough to say. Whenever you post your dorados it makes me miss keeping them :(

funny thing is, 'fang" is my armatus' name too.

The first guy I saw keeping Aimara with rays was doing so with some very rare very expensive rays back when Aimara were very expensive and unheard of here. Heck, I think Seichii sent one of the first true Aimaras over here. I figured since the guy was very knowledgable and possesed one of the craziest collections of fish on the planet he had to trust it working. I merely followed what he did, and got a lil guy and raised it with rays. I'm sure he had money, imagine what it must have cost to mix Falkneri rays with some of the only known variants of Aimara in the hobby back before most of us even knew what MFK was. I'm guessing guts too if you're caring for that many Aimara. But all I did was trust his idea so I get no credit there.

I added the Dorado after months of the Aimara having no issues with the Brycons, barbs or other "dithers". Figured if Brycon worked then maybe Dorado would too.....

I just hope I finally eventually get to see what gold golden Dorado look like......

Its all about balance with these cohabs, you'll figure it out, and like you said if you felt like your rays were in danger or seen damage, you have another tank to seperate the aimara.

I know the other Dorado descales and trims fins..... Could have also ran into something as well, who knows. I will try keeping them together again, but won't be holding my breath. They are definetly one of my favorite fish, still sad my last one got cooked in a stealth heater failure. These guys are now the second biggest I've ever raised. Yours was a monster wasn't it???? Got any old pics???

If you speaking of the fish keeper out of Japan, I am familiar with the postings.

Could you tell us exactly how you introduced the aimara + ray combination? I'd also like to know how long it's been successful and whether or not if there's been any witnessed/evidenced negative exchanges between the two. I do plan on trying this one day as well.
