Our chocolate cichlids laid eggs.

I was waiting for an update ...... Good news! If you really want fry I would take some babies away now. Siphon a few off but leave some behind so parents dont blame each other or stress out. (Fish cant count so you can take quite a few). Fish left with parents tend to grow faster however so its up to you. Watching cichlids tend babies is a very rewarding experience too. Just depends on what your priorities are. There is always a risk the parents eat fry and there is a risk your fishkeeping skills will kill fry.

Use an established sponge filter for fry with water from the parents tank and a non predatory cleaner (snails?) and ideally feed some live bribe shrimp.

I will try to siphon some today.seems it might better our chances of raising some of these guys. The parents are awesome fish, great personalities. Thanks for the Idea fishdance.

There are babies everywhere.

Yeahhhh they are notorious for not being fantastic parents and fish like this tend to have BIG spawns. Around 1000 fish on average for mature chocolates but I`ve had some huge spawns. Do you have growout room? Do you have enough live food? If not, just let nature sort out the strongest. You can try crushing protein rich pellet in a pepper mill for really fine powder but live food is the best. Vinegar eel or baby brine shrimp.

Wait till the fry really start free swimming!!

You can also use a little (very little) boiled egg yolk. It breaks apart enought for small fry to eat-just watch how much you put in, to prevent too much spoiled food.

fish look great !!!! did they eat the rest ?? or did you just lose them to other causes ??
