So I was at work making my rounds (water plant operator) and it is not unsusall to see fish in one of the basins and there he was! Dipped him out brought him home. Named him "Basin" Bought him some Rosies, per researching this sight, and WOW. My whole family loves him. This is one of the coolest animals ever. He is only about 5' inches long but he is a natural born killer and here he is.

Your fish and your story have made my day :headbang2

Beautiful Gar... have you verified what type?
Looks like it may be a longnose or a real spotted.

Not sure on the ID, wait for more to leave their input.
Keep us updated on him.

Yes they are one of the coolest animals ever and without a doubt the best type of fish to own...

Not sure what kind yet. I am guessing long nose or spotted too, guess time will tell. I already have a bigger tank lined up for later. Thanks for your reply. Keep us in mind, we will be hopefully doing updates and be asking for advice, Long live the Fish!

You know I cannot find out if it is legal here (georgia). Anybody know or know where to look?

In all honesty it doesn't really matter, the only thing that's illegal is if you don't take good care of it. ;)

What size tank is he in now and what are his tankmates?

I put him in a 20 gal, but I have a 100 + for later. The only tank mates he has currently are feeders. I did read they enjoy company of fish to large for them to eat. I have had him 4 days now, I am worried about putting the wrong play mate in, any suggestions?

If it's a fish native to your state, it should be legal. But you can check your state DNR website to find out.

As most of these other gar guys will tell you, the best tankmates for a gar are other gar :grinno: (and you already know you want some more ;) )

best tank mates are other gar, bichir. and 90% sure its a longnose. ur gonna need a big tank if it is.
