Our First Gar!!! Basin

Maybe not so heavy on the feeding as he may not want the same growth rate as you. He said it's only in like a 20gal right now. If he feeds him a little slower than it will buy him more time to get the 100 setup. Just my 2cents... If you do that I would maybe just do like a few feeders every other day or every 2 days. Then as the 100 gal comes along you can increase feeding. Also if you keep a 20 gal stocked with feeders then you are gonna have some serious ammonia so you will need to make sure you are WELL filtered... I would take it easy till you get the 100gal, he won't starve...

Also, PM me if you are interested in selling him or another one that you can catch. I am in search of a Longnose and a Trop.

gar keeper......
never mind, u r a trip, you know that? :)
anyways, gator is right, give him plenty of feeders(get a bigger tank quick) so that he is properly fed. it will take a long long while but a longnose can top out at 36"(i believe)
good luck man.

Probably longer, but it will take a while, and maybe not that long in a tank. Although those longnose as bass pro shop are like 4 feet long... then again, they're in a 20,000 gallon or so tank :)

nice gar

If it's a fish native to your state, it should be legal.

Conner, in AZ all "sport" fish that AZ game and fish stock in lakes are illegal to keep:screwy: which I hate, I would love to have a pond out back with Largemouth, catfish, bluegill etc.
Also, i called them "sport" fish because they aren't native to AZ, but AZ game and fish introduced them.

Really? I thought most states didn't care as long as they were caught at a legal size. But again, they're not native, even if they are stocked. That makes a difference, I guess :screwy:

You could probably get the DNR to stock it for you, even if you can't collect them yourself :nilly:

I could but it's illegal to possess them at all, in order to move them (like traveling) they have to be out of water and something like their heads have to be cut off:screwy:

That's why when I get done with school, I'm moving out of this oven of a valley to NJ where my dad's family is:D

OP are you gonna get more gars now?

I love how you guys act like keeping fish that are illegal in your state is some big serious crime or something. Like the fish have some tracking device in it and when you get home the F&G are gonna kick down your door at 4am.
They just don't want people selling them or breeding them and putting in places where they are not suppose to be. If you just keep the damn thing in your tank and don't invite any F&G staff to your house for dinner then you should be in good shape.

Just go down to the damn water, catch the damn fish, put it in a damn bucket. Drive home and put it in your damn tank after proper acclamation.

:nilly:
