out of 11 how many stay?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you want to keep all twelve a 240 gallon is fine.
It will be well over a year before they start to pair off, you have a long wait ahead. And even then, i know someone who had the intention to breed and kept 18. And there was not one pair out of that (all piranhas had reached 10inches’ish before he realised). Red bellies are not the easiest fish to breed. So do not get your hopes up, just think of it as an added bonus if it does occur.

Your 11 piranhas will be fine in that current 100 gallon until they reach 6 inches. Then you should look to narrowing the shoal to 5 or 6 piranhas.

thanks for all the good advise:) .cant wait till they get bigger!!

hey bro. keep them all in a 100 gal. 12 in a 100 gal is fine to me. they will be crammed and squished but hey that just means they will be more vicious and hungry for food. and thats what piranahs are all about. right? hahah

I had 4 pygos in my 125. Two piraya, a red, and a caribe. All fish were about 2" when I got them and in no joke in ;ess then a year later all four were easily 8 inches! To me that tank looked packed!

Oh and I believe its 2+ years for your reds to mature....especially for the females!

so u guys think i can get away with keping them for a couple of years, i hope they all last that long, iv kept a lot of differnt south american cichlid's from jewel cichilid,to red devils,(badest fish of all times ) and they always thin each other out, and never onece have i had fish breed, if in two years i have at least one breedin pare ill be happy!!

Well if you look after them good and proper. With good water quality and good feeding, you can expect up to 1 inch growth per month. And as i recommended, you want to thin them out when they get to 6 inches. So i think you are looking at six to eight months here...

Squashing piranhas really is not cool… okay like Tong said, they get more aggresive. But that aggression is just channelled between their own. You end up with tattered and beaten looking piranhas. A piranha with no eyes, half its fins and damage to the scales will not live up to its potential.

You will get the most out of your piranhas by stocking them correctly with roughly 20 gallons per adult.
And you will definably not get any breeding pairs by over stocking and squashing them all in a unsuitable tank..

I recon most would recommend going along the lines of thinning them out at 6 inches, to 5 or 6 piranhas.

,......thanks, that's what ill do..

yeah i would thin them out a little in a few months. 12 adult rbp's in a 100g tank would be stupid their would be more fish than water in their.tong is looking 2 have a meat locker not an aquarium.

I agree with joshy. I would recomend 20 to 30 gallons per fish, especialy if you want them to breed. No fish ( except cons ) will breed under very crammed and overstocked conditions. just my .02

My 180 is stocked with only six 5-6 inchers....August 1st 2006, this pack was no less than half inch...Keep up with weekly water changes and vary the the diet...Try packing their stomachs with shelled shrimp, prawns, krill, silversides, and color enhancing pellets....
