With the FLOOD of recent "Out of the Hobby, Fire Sale" threads in the Marketplace forums, I have to ask - Is this because people are just trying to make some extra cash selling their tanks and stock, or is it really that expensive to maintain a "Monster" tank? I only have a 140 gal now, but have plans for a Biggun' in the next year or two. I was thinking once you have the equipment and stock it wouldn't be all that expensive for general maintenence. It hasn't been so bad so far with my 140, but all these threads have got me wondering...

It could be a number of things, ie boredom, financial situation, moving or just plain tired of it..........

Yeah Boredum will come to me eventually and I will leave.

Money is a big issue. I scrounge pennies to pay everything off and then, the tiny pocket full of money goes towards my fish.

I won't stop if I move but I can see moving to a smaller house or Appt. and not having room.

I would think it is the financial burden in the degrading economy.

for me it's just boredom with my current setup. not about cost to maintain really. i have a 400g, 150g, and a 55g running and my electric bill doesnt go over $150

I'm a newbie so boredom never occured to me, lol. But that and moving have always been around so that wouldn't explain why there have been so many as of recent. The amount of money in the bigger setups just must be too tempting with the crap ass economy. Good for us new guys I guess...

My water bill hasnt changed at all since i started this hobby and my electric bill maybe saw a rise of 10 bucks. I think I spend more on treats/chemicals for the fish in one month time frame then I do on Electric and water.

I have been in the hobby for 40 years plus and never get bored of the hobby. One trick that has worked for me is I only keep 1 tank set up at a time . Sounds crazy but it works for me and I thoiughly enjoy the hobby. I like to browse the forums and go to differant lfs. Currently have a 50 breeder set up and it takes me no time at all for maintence. I really enjoy this tank. I see a lot of you get burned out but man cut down on the tanks for one thing.

Heh. I do everything as cheaply as I can, or free, or I don't do it.
