Hi Im wanted to get a 8x3x3 foot fish tank to be placed outdoor due to space constraint.

The only spot I manage to find get a little bit of sunshine over the day. I guess rain too.

So just wondering what type of material should I choose for the fish tank and the stand.

Also what other consideration I should think of will be much appreciated as I am really new to this hobby.

Thanks alot in advance!

If your doing a fish tank make it from glass or acrylic, if your doing a pond style use 2x4 or 2x6's or concrete. The sunlight will be fine

Yea yea, may I know which can stand sunlight better glass or acrylic. My thought is that glass is better. Thanks !!

I would try to build some sort of canopy or shelter over the tank to shield it from rain, keep it cooler in the shade, and keep any electronics outside the tank dry.

Sent from my SCH-R950 using MonsterAquariaNetwork App

I agree with mudbutt and others about the shelter, and UV for algae control.
I had a tank outside a few summers ago, and within a very short time it went rampant with hair, and free floating algae because it was not adequately sheltered.
So much algae, that I could only see the fish, when they were close to a side, a few inches into the tank, and they disappeared.

all my tanks are outside but the sunlight only hits early in the morning where the sun is still low.. but yeah, my tanks always have algae.. im not using any special filter to prevent the algae growth instead i remove the algae evry week and my fish are fine.. :) but to me, excessive exposure to sunlight really stresses my fish out and sometimes it warms out the water a bit.. keep in mind tht u have to be aware of the sudden change of temperature on the tank's surroundings.. it will cause effect to ure fish.. but other than tht, no problems to me :) i have no shelter to my tank except for the tank cover because i have my house to shelter it for me :)

Thanks for all the contribution ! I learned alot!

Regarding shelter, if we are talking about roof, I have one but its slightly bigger than the tank only. So the sun will get to the tank at some angle(when sun is not directly on top of the tank =s).

Algae I dont think it will be much of a issue, cause today I went to my lfs and their aquarium is exposed to way more sunlight and they kept it under control with UV filtration with no problem.

For the stand, they suggest me go for wood as it is more sturdy than steel etc.

Now whats concern me the most is the material for the fish tank, will acrylic deteriorate under sunlight in the long term? Im pretty sure glass wont.

Once again thanks alot for all of your time!! It's soooo much appreciated!

I'd go concrete and glass. Are there any floating plants available in your area? Floating plants can block out a lot of the light from getting to the water, and can help control algae by competing for nutrients in the water
