Outdoor ponds in FL?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it all depends and changes every year. i live in florida for my first 15 years and have kept tropic fish in more central Florida around New Symerna beach/Daytona, Arcadia and tampa. i had a large school of hoplo catfish, tilapia, various cichlids and plecos live in my ponds. the weather conditions are different every year. a few years ago there was a cold kill which killed lots of snook and tropic invasive fish. this is what killed of my hoplo catfish and ciclhids they both lived for around 7 years before that though. i still have the tilapia and the plecos, they are every where and do pretty well. if i were you id just make sure the pond it pretty deep.

My family is from Miami, originally from coconut grove(south Miami) now north Miami beach not much difference between the two, we had a 2 foot deep raised pond, formal style and we only had hardy tropical fish, can't remember what they were that was a long time ago. The hardier the fish the better you won't need a heater, never did a water change the rain took care of that, never fed them either.
