Outdoor tank, how to prevent rust?

Weird, there is a bunch of wrought iron stuff sitting in my parents yard that has been powder coated and all of it is rust free. A lot of that stuff has been there for at least 10 years.

It depends on the environment, how well it was prepped, and how good a job the powdercoater did. Zinc metallizing is bulletproof! Even if it is powdercoated what happens to the metal if the powdercoating gets chipped?
Outside, by the beach plain powdercoating doesn't last long!

You guys forgot to protect it from volcanos. As far as I can tell, the OP has not reponded where the tank is going to be. Is it going to be on a covered patio or is it going to sit on the edge of a volcano? Or is it going to sit in the surf at the beach, or is it going to keep out the neighbors angry poodles? We just don't know.

In all likelyhood, it is going to be on a patio protected from the weather. If the worse that it will ever see is occasional humidity, then a simple paint job will hold up for over a decade.

The OP's location is "cold blue hell", so maybe a more appropriate coating would be a nice layer of R-19 insulation. :D

Where do they sell that outdoor paint made for volcano proofing again?

I don't know but that old man that lived at the base of Mt. St. Helens had some so maybe we could ask him. Oh wait...he's dead.

sorry for the late reply! anyways it's tropical weather here. i will take note of what you've told me. thanks to everyone who posted! i'm now thinking of trying cinder blocks(new thread coming soon!)

Best option - Hot dip galvanising. Thats the zinc coating the guys are talking about. They take your whole frame and drop it into a vat of molten zinc to completely coat it. Not something you can do at home, but it's the best possible coating.

Second best is a zinc based primer, also called cold galvanising. Not as good as hot dip as it's only painted on, but it may be good enough.

A good powdercoat may be good enough to last a while, depending on your climate. But if you live near the coast or in a humid climate, galvanise it.
