Being in SoCal, you probably won't have to worry about frost lines or freezing.

What kind of fish are you planning on keeping? If its koi, then you can build the pond like you've stated, build/buy a filter, and be done with it.

If you plan on keeping tropicals, then you will probably need a heater in winter, and may need to fashion some kind of lid for the pond to help keep heat in.

Planning on trying to house some pbass in there. I'm definitely going to add a make-shift chicken wire cover for the daytime and I'm also looking for a jacuzzi cover or something like that to put over it at night. I'm gonna add a heater and pump for sure but do you have any recommendations good ones? I'm probably going to go with a mag drive that goes through a DIY filter then down a little waterfall. Thanks for all your help and advice.. I'll be sure to post some pics as soon as it's making progress.

The pump you choose depends on the size of the pond, the turnover rate you want, and the filter you use. A DIY Skippy filter or bog filter, will work well for that pond. You want a pump that will do at least the entire volume of the pond per hour. You might want to go with 1.5 to 2 times the volume per hour just to have good turnover.

Thanks so much I really appreciate all your help.. I tried finding out how many gallons it's gonna be and i think it's around 600-800. So i should try to get around a 1500 GPH pump, right? Do you have any recommendations on a certain brand? I know LittleGiants are supposedly good but other than that I don't really know. Bout to do more research, but like I said thanks I really appreciate your time.
