just remember you need to concentrate on cold water species if you decide to leave them out all winter..we had a di-icer floating around on top the first winter.. but it would die out.. and have to be replaced constantly...so thats when we started taking all the goldfish in... they are so use to it now..8 years old ..in and out..haha. plus their babies that survive... ... it is only a small outdoor pond .. i put them in a big live stock tank in the basement during winter and they are in the same size outside during summer.... i used the same livestock 300gal to make the pond.. .. We just dug the hole and put the tub in to the spot..then added rocks around it and live plants.. some lily's in a pot in the water and the filter fountain..looks very nice in the summer...

For filtration, if you decide to go with the 10 ft dia. pond, id reccomend a 4" bottom drain, plumbed to a 200+ gal. settling chamber, then have the output pipe from the settling chamber go into a fluidized bed filter, filled with kaldness k1, a 9" air diffuser mounted on the bottom of the barrel to provide air, id go with a medo 45b airpump hooked up to the diffuser, then from the fluidized bed, have it go to a sand/gravel filter ( 55 gal drum also) then have an es3500 return the water to the pond, via TPR's or something else. but mainly the filtration depends on how heavily the pond is stocked. if you have any questions feel free to PM me or post here.

Air bubbler. Strong moving water will never freeze. You will want to make it 3'-4' deep. But if you keep an air bubbler you should be fine

My ponds filter ran year round..

I had all my plumbing buried 8-12" underground. I dug a trench and lined it with packing peanuts. Then laid my PVC pipes and covered it with packing peanuts then filled it in with dirt. I had the pvc plumbed into 2 Hozelock Cipro canisters, then through a UV Sterilizer back to a Spitting frog and a Water fall. The frog would eventually have a hollow frozen straw with water running through it and the fall would sheet over with water flowing under it. I would position my deicer right below the fall so that the water had a place to go.

Eventually what I did was drill a hole into my house and run a 50' Pool Vacuum Hose in a loop around the base of my furnace. The water would go through the filters, then into the house then back out to the UV and return to the fall and the frog. I haven't had a freeze over since. I did however lose my entire pond last season due to a nephew who felt the need to chuck a 30 Lbs piece of shale into the pond and slice the liner. So I am planning a rebuild design this season.

It doesn't get quite as cold down here in Mercer County NJ, But we get our fair share.
