Oven cooked sculpey, faux coral

Wow those look good! I showed my wife and she said it looks like those puddles of weird puke you call corals. (That's a compliment from her) I used to have a couple reef tanks. You should try some acropora and montipora.

Acropora is what I am emulating. The montipora would be a little more difficult. Might have to build a pvc pipe skeleton.

Some brain coral, built around egg crate.20171227_150948.jpg
I will heat shape the egg crate next time. This was a practice.20171227_151628.jpgpressed in tight from the back, Then over fill the back with putty. I used brown, as I am saving my cool colors. II used too much red, but I am out of blue and purple.20171227_154252.jpgstart in the red center digging, then outline the polyp. 15144582329341273831087.jpgI clear coated the red center with hot glue , but some super clear, epoxy, or silicon. The green was too diluted, with white, to illuminate well, under the blue led channel.

Ok, pvc sheeting, as a canvas for pvc sculpey 111. Unsanded 20171228_105559.jpg , the pvc sheet, was alcohol wiped, and pre heated with 212f water. As its 5f outside.

Oven baked at 275F for 15 minutes. *** no odor of chloride fumes at this low of heat.****

The pvc sheeting is a thermoplastic, at 198F it softens, at 225 it is moldable. At 275 it very soft and takes shapes, I hand rolled them under cold water. With the sculpey already applied.

The curved piece in the back was, pre bent, and then sculpeied. During the cooking it flattned
Back out, which caused a crack were the yellow piece was attached.
It took an ice pick screw driver to peel off most of the putty. A thin skim coat, seams to work the plastizer into the pvc sheeting, pvc pipe, to get a good bond.
The egg crate, curls up when heated, as it shrinks. The BBQing grill at 300f works nice.

I thought they looked like acans and open brain coral. Acropora looks like tree branches. Montipora could be plating or branching. That new one looks like brain coral also called favia. Wonder if you could pull off zoanthids?

To bond to PVC piping, would you suggest using a pressure cooker?

I love the idea and want to try making a root system

275 F oven temp, works best.
I mostly was pressure cooking to see if the putty is water proof. To see if the colors would leave.

You might pack the hollow space with, fin foil or poly flosss. Paper even, As at 275, it might soften and shape shift.

Awesome, so much knowlege. Years ago I threw away my expensive sculpey, as it was too dry and hard to work with. So simple to fix.
