Over-dosing Prime reduces oxygen??

the bottle advises you can using anywhere from 2-5x the normal dose safely, although the 5x does is in emergencies . . . but yeah, I've found if you ask Seachem a question, they are pretty good about getting back to you

why do you say Prime is a waste of money? if it is, why use it at all ?
 
Seachem has stated that prime does in fact cause oxygen deprivation. It builds up as well...So if you use a little more every time, eventually you will have a problem on your hands. It is safer to use as directed....What emergency would cause for a larger dose? Treat the water, and you are fine. Adding more prime, will do nothing....They would recommend larger doses, so you buy more. Not to save the day.
 
i believe i probably the poster in question. i checked my bottle just now and it doesnt say anything about the lower o2 levels. but im almost positive ive read that either on the bottle or the seachem site a couple years ago.

i also did a google search and found a couple other forum post that mention the same thing about prime

that warning was only mentioned about the emergency dosing.

Sometimes I'll use less than recommended if I think I've previously over dosed. When you do a water change, it's dilution, not replacement.

are you sure it builds up? primes half life is supposed to be 24hours so after 2 days prime should be gone
 
when I had a bacterial crash a few months ago I was getting ammonia readings around 8ppm after introducing several large cichlids, I never really used 5X the amount because i thing that is reserved for a nitrite spike. I did however only fill my tank about 85% so that my spraybar gave pleanty of aeration, which you should do in emergencies anyways. I did have some pretty foul sulfur smelling water for a few days, but I think the prime saved my fish. It is amazing what it will do for nitrite readings also.

Anything will build up. If it has no where to go it'll stay. It may break down, but it's still there.

I love Prime, but using more than the recommended dose is silly.
