Over-dosing Prime reduces oxygen??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If collectively you open your gallon of prime, for longer than 24 hours over the course of three months, is it inactive? As long as the concentration exists, non attached, it is active. Even with agitation. If there is nothing to fight, the prime builds up.

I think being diluted in oxygen rich water that has strong flow, surface agitation and filtration such as a typical fish tank would be FAR more encouragement to biodegrade than being opened a couple times a week after sitting fairly stagnant…

Also consider that 24 hours = 17280 minutes… my 2 liter bottle (½ gal) treats 20,000 gallons… So for me to have my ½ gal bottle open for 24 hours collectively I would have to keep the bottle open for one minute per dose (it takes me far less than this) and would have to be dosing 1.16 gallons at a time…

I just don’t see even a gallon bottle ever being opened for any where near 24 hours… and I do not see a bottle of Prime ever experiencing anywhere near the amount of agitation, exposure to air or dilution that it will in even a few minutes in a fish tank…

Therefore, ignoring hype and viewing it from a matter of chemistry, I see how it is possible for Prime to biodegrade in our fish tanks in a short time where it would not biodegrade in the bottle allowing it a long shelf life.

I dont work for Seachem

and I am sure no chemist

but its not rocket science to see that leaving a bottle of Prime sit open in no way compares to mixing it into an aquarium 'ecosystem' where all sorts of natural processes take place which can affect and biodegrade Prime as was said by Seachems support.

if you 'trust the chemistry' then please explain the chemistry and what part of chemistry leads you to believe Seachem is wrong about their own product.

bigspizz you have said more than once if Prime has nothing to react with(or nothing to fight as you put it) then it builds up

It would seem to my untrained brain that the 'chemistry' occurring inside an aquarium is not limited to Prime and it's intended purpose. Is the Prime that is 'leftover' just sitting there inert? It is not susceptible to other chemical and biological processes?

Could your post have been any more 'condescending'? Sorry for using common nomenclature. DILLUTION.............This is a debate, not a hey "bigspizz said this" thread. The quote I was referring to was read by Rally's, myself, and anyone else who was here then. Prime builds up, and causes oxygen deprivation. Take it or leave it.

i had a bottle explode in my old apartment beneath my tank. when we moved out, that side of the room STILL smelled like prime :)
How the hell did it explode?!

Ive never had a problem I double dose prime with every water change to be safe. My water company sucks as you all know. Not worth worrying about. If you cant get over worrying about it . Add an airstone simple as that :)

touchy aren't we? I was/am just trying to further my knowledge about a product that I use every day.

I still stand by my knowledge,
i understand the chemistry, not the hype.

I thought from reading that you knew something specific about Chemistry and how it pertains to Prime. Sorry if I was wrong.

well... since I have seen no evidence or even an educated guess supporting the side of the 'debate', which is in direct contradiction to Seachems own tech support... I will leave it....because bigspizz said so haha sheesh

carry on folks

What did they 'do/or'say that was 'scientific'? Not 'touchy', just not willing to be brow beaten. I know how it works, and admitted to being able to find the "proof", but again, some of us were here....What the latest "seachem" mega pros said, is in direct contradiction of what the original rep said. If I work up some energy, I might play......

I would like to add...

One of the only reasons I continued my side of the debate is that BigSpizz is generally a well experienced, intelligent thinker & respected hobbyist and I thought I could learn some things from engaging in such a debate with him...

I'm glad we were able to "disagree without being disagreeable"... and I'm glad he gave me a couple of angles to reevaluate what I thought and was told by Seachem... Although I still think I'm right *rib jab* :D

Neither side of this coin has been giving anyone potentially harmful advice… So no need to have any harshness in our debate…

And God Forbid if I didn’t get along with everyone I ever disagreed with I’d be one lonely grouch!

*Group Hug!!!*

lol

Thank you for that NC...That means a lot to me.
