Over filtering

So I've got an Aqueon Power Filter 20 (rated for 125 gph) on my 10 gallon. While the tank was cycling, I had a snail in the tank which got sucked into the intake. I ordered some sponge online, and while I was waiting for it, I used a cut up loofah in there. The sponge was working well. Last night my Dad decided it was getting dirty and took it out and wanted to change it in the morning. I woke up this morning to find my Honey Gourami and one of my Albino Cories sitting in my filter, dead.

usually intakes are covered
i dont think this is a case of over filtering to death

I don't know how else they could have gotten into the filter and ended up torn up.

they swim in there because there stupid. the impellar probably tore them up.
buy a proper screen and put it over the intake.


alot of people have filters much more over rated then yours on there tank.
a measily 125 gph wont wear a fish out.
 
Most healthy fish don't end up in filters, they croak, then get sucked up the filters. What happened to the prefilter/cage that such large fish were able to be sucked up to begin with? Even without a sponge or stretched nylon covering only pretty small fry should be able to be sucked up alive OR dead.
 
Sosdoudt is correct about the filtering, all four of my tanks run 10 to 12 times turnover per hour, 125 in a 10 gallon is 12 and a half turnovers per hour, pretty much the norm. 5 times turnover is the absolute minimum recommended.
In my opinion there is no such thing as over filtration, the more flow the better, as long as it doesn't bother the fish you keep.

Yeah, I completely agree about the overfiltering thing. I don't feel that there is such a thing as too much filter.
