1) a ton of extra bio filtration is not a waste imo.. Granted only as much bacteria grows as is needed.......... however if a fish dies and rots or you over feed.........the that extra bio will get to work in very short order possibly saving your fish

3) extra decaying organic matter doesnt hurt anything in your tank or in your filter if:

a. you have enough bio
b. your water changes keep your nitrates low enough.

beautifully said john, exactly what i was thinking but put into a neatly organized reply. i do disagree with 3 b though, don't the desolved organics in your water provide nutrients for algae. as for the whole argument about too much flow, i've been a believer that "too much flow" is hard to accomplish ever since i saw a silver molly swim upstream to about 4" away from the return pumping in 1200gph to get to some food.
