ok just got a new oceanic tank with a corner overflow in it i want to replace the rubber gaskets so i took it out and i guess wat you call the stand pipe(pipe water flows through to drain out) is a pos and i want to make a new one wat is it suposed to look like can it be a pipe just below water level do i drill holes in it

Just a pipe will be pretty loud. Do a search for durso stand pipe on google and you will find a site telling you how to build your own.

There are also modification that will allow the overflow to pick up water near the floor as well as near the surface...

This will greatly increase the potential for mechanical filtration offered by the sump...

I personally do not understand why so many people do not give themselves the advantage of having the sump serve all their filtration needs...

It's like buying a BMW then taking the bus to work......

would i just drill holesin the overflow box in the middle and bottom i have seen newer verflows with the slots cut in top middle and bottom for better water flow

Personally I wouldn't use overflow boxes... I think they take up too much room and disrupt the (aesthetic) flow of the tank...

I just shared my approach on overflows with someone the other day on here and they draw a detailed drawing of what I explained... let me see if I can find it...

hmmm exclent drawings and good idea my tank is drilled in the bottom with a square corner overflow siliconed in since its leaking there i was going to take out the overflow and in the bottom and the middle on both sides drill 3/16 holes a 1/2 inch apart so water would flow from botm middle and over flow at the op do you think that would be worth it

Personally... I would take out the overflow box and replace it with a fake tree... as described in the thread I linked you to...

Your idea of of drilling holes in the overflow box will definitely make a difference... Just acknowledge that your tank level will drop to the same level as your overflow box will...

When you read instructions other's may not take this into account... for instance on the durso standpipe How To's they mention the overflow box's equilibrium being lower than the tanks...

So it will work, just be sure to factor in the difference in every aspect of the design...
