over flow...

There's this magical mysterious thing called a float switch that you can use to control the level in the sump. Just think toilet reservoir.

In all honesty, your drip idea is better suited for a closed system. Do away with the sump and overflow and just use canister filters.

Skip the sump in favor of cans?! I vote the other way. Skip the cans & the drip system, just go with a big sump & regular water changes. You can always add a drip later.

nolapete is right. some ppl arnt reading it all they way through or im wording it wrong lol either way. i guess the only way i could do it is drill the drain into my sump. but to do that i would have to put the sump out side of the stand buy the window. soooo i think i might just stick with a canister for now and do the drip system. im doing this on just a 55ga trying to figure everything out before i go to do it on a 350ga. i was hoping to make the 350 pretty much maintenance free. ill be going out of town soon. i have someone to watch over the fish but its a girl and id really hate to make her do water changes on that thing. she weighs a whole 92 pounds

nolapete may be right, but judging by your posts this is headed for disaster. I'm not sure what exactly your plan is for the drip system, but if it involves windows, out of town trips, or sub-100lb women, I would be betting against you. My money is on burned-out canisters, dead fish, and water damage. Just my 2 cents...

Austinchap,

Here's a solution.

Eliminate the hole drilled in the tank.

Get a small submersible pump, put it in your sump, and put it on a timer.
Connect a hose to the pump then run the hose out the window.

Get a float switch, set it up in your sump
Connect it to the new water supply

If the power goes off, no water is supplied to the sump because the float switch has it turned off. The pump doesn't send any water out the window either.

When power is on this is what happens.

Timer turns pump on (you'll have to figure out the on off cycle, but probably like 2 minutes tops) and it pumps water out the window.

The lower water in the sump causes the float switch to activate the new water supply. It shuts off when the sump level is back up. This will repeat as long as the timer is active on the pump out the window.

It also has the added benefit of automatic top off when evaporation occurs.

Yes I was goin to say that you can go to youtube and that will give also a eye look at what to do. I have been debating on building one for my 29 gallon but with it being so small I just dont know what good it would do. If any input send me a message thanks and wish you luck on your conquest
